on msconfig I clear all except for anti virus and firewall all other programs will start as and when clicked.the trouble is a lot of programs self install automatic start on bootup close all except for 2 mentioned

Go to Control Panel --> go to Security Center --> Automatic Updates and go to it's options, properties or preferences page. Select "Turn off automatic updates"

A sidenote though, I honestly do not think your online virus scan is reliable. If you update by using Windows Update or Microsoft Update there will be no virusses. There's a big change the scanner itself is harmful software named Scareware (it tells you something is wrong, or potentionally harmful, then it tells you to download an exotic virusscanner or something to protect you but infect creates even more trouble by means of spam, spyware, pop-ups or trojans.)
