It sounds like the drive has just stopped working. Since it's likely under warranty still, I would contact the manufacturer and have them replace the drive. If you have a cd stuck in the drive, you can use a paperclip in the small hole on the face of the drive to eject it and remove your CD.

I have a 14-18 month old samsung R20 Laptop / Note book. Whene i bought it ithey set up a pass word for me and a reset disk. I have my samsung Vista Disk and not the reset disk as i have moved twice since...

You should try to boot from either an Ubuntu Linux disc and get the data off the hard disk (to say a pen drive or a portable hard drive), or you can download Hiren's Boot Disc and try the various utilities to boot the computer and get the data off the hard drive.

Note that you'll need to burn the above images on to disc using your disc imaging program like Nero, Roxio, etc. Choose the option "burn image to disc" in your CD writing program.

Once you get the data backed up, format the laptop and reinstall vista from your Vista disc.

Hope that helps,
Regards,
Raspal

My dell studio laptop (one month old) has problems playing dvds

It sounds like you have eliminated a media player problem.

Here are some more things you could try:

Disable your antivirus when playing the movie.

Have Dell replace CD/DVD drive. I got a bad drive in my new Latitude and they replaced it. It was a long phone call...be prepared.

It could be overheating. Make sure you have good air flow under the notebook. They make notebook coolers which you can find with a web search.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

Cd/ dvd drive burned out

If it is 5 months old, get it replaced from Dell. Dell's laptop CD/DVD drives are a cinch to replace. Just a couple screws if I remember correctly.

I had the same thing happen to an Averatec AV3715-EH1 notebook, but it was well out of warranty. Had to buy a new DVD burner drive.
