My friend has an HP desktop computer. He is running Window XP. When he turns on the computer all he gets a blank screen with a flashing curser half way down the screen. He has tried to boot into safe mode using F8 when he starts the computer, but that does not work. he can not get into safe mode. He just recently changed to ATT service and they set up his computer to open ATT home page etc... but not he can not do anything. What do you suggest?

The "home page" is the 1st page you see when "linking/accessing the Internet.....I might suggest he "disconnect" his internet cord or modem before trying to "reboot" the computer. I have seen some people that like to use their favorite web page as a Windows desktop image....which is kinda quirky, but whatever they like is up to them. It "might" however be trying to startup instantly to the internet without the usual "boot screen" for Windows. You may be ablt to restore the previous setting for startup/boot by entering the BIOS program before the actual booting starts. It's tricky, but, you have to be fast to enter. You might press (insert -F8-F1-F10-F12 keys - any) before turning on which should allow you tomake changes to the Boot Sequence.

Hp pavilion 760n when turned on it makes clicking sound for a while and stops the monitor screen is blank with only a curser flashing in the top left corner.

The clicking is coming from the hard disk - it has died - so the BIOS is signalling that the OS is missing - cursor flashing in the top left corner.
Replace the hard disk and reinstall Windows.

Hi, I have a HP Mini 210-1170 netbook. After turning it on, the screen is at a desktop screen, but no tool bars nor icons are shown. The curser moves, so I don't think it's frozen... but I also don't...

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del - the Task Manager should pop up. Click File, click Run, type explorer , click OK and the icons and the taskbar should appear.

I have a Compac computer that has Windows XP installed (SP2), when I start up the computer, the Windows XP will not run correctly. Once it seems to be opening Windows, my computer screen just looks blank...

When you are on the blank screen try to press CTRL+ALT+DEL on your keyboard at the same time. it should bring up the task manager window. now, click on FILE > New Task Run > Type in EXPLORER.EXE and press Ok. it should show you your Taskbar, desktop wallpaper, desktop icons

HP 550 will not get to the log in stage

This is a known issue with Vista. Microsoft has not documented a solution but SP2 for Vista addresses this issue.

You can try running chkdisk from the repair console (insert Vista installation DVD and select repair).

If you have backup CDs or DVDs, try to restore your system.
I nothing helps, you will have to manually back-up your data and reinstall Windows.

To back-up your data you might want to remove the hard disk and connectit to another working PC as a secondary hard disk. Then simply boot up,copy your data and plug the hard disk back in.

You can download theVista SP2 from here. Also download and install SP1 before installing SP2.

Thank you.

When i turn on laptop screen oes blank but can see curser

Do you see the acer splash screen before you get the black screen with the curser? If so it is more than likely a windows problem. Boot from your XP disk and select R when prompted to repair. Once in the repair console type the following:

chkdsk /r

When it is finished (will take about an hour) then type exit to restart the computer.

Hope this helps
