What kind of alarm are you trying to install? Each alarm is different. Also does the alarm have remote start, roll up the windows and lock the doors. What all options does the alarm have?

The car alarm going off by itself. did it last summer and starting again.

Aftermarket alarm or a manufacturer equipped? If it's OE then more than likely there's a problem with the body control module, or a problem with one of the switches or wiring in a door/hood/trunk. Basically what's happening is one of the switches is making the car think a door (trunk or hood) opened and setting the alarm off. Or the module that controls that system is failing. Moisture, humidity or age can cause these problems. If it is one of these problems, sadly enough you're going to have to take it to a shop to have it diagnosed. Other possibility, a weak car battery (2008 would have a 6 year old battery in it if never been changed, even if that's not the culprit I would recommend a new one especially before winter.
maybe disconnecting battery for a while then hook it back up my reset the system.

Disconnect alarm

if it is aftermarket then all you have to do is disconnect the wire to the alarm that has power constantly going to it. if it is factory then you will need to make sure you tie the starter kill wire back into itself so you have a continuous circuit and not a broken one so that the car will still start. factory alarms are always a pain to locate where the starter kill wires are but usually the are near the steering column.

Aftermarket alarm removed and yellow wire not connected

The yellow wire is the starter wire. When the alarm was instaled this wire was cut. The other end should be close by. Just conect them back together, and she should start.
