There is a safety switch for the brake clutch and if the seat safety switch is not activated by someone sitting on it, then the mower will die. So if you are sitting in the seat and the brake clutch is released and the seat safety is faulty then the engine dies, so the seat safety is where you should start looking.
sounds like a faulty safety switch. i had the same problem on my toro yard cruiser and it ended up being the seat switch. when you have the mower in neutral and the pto off, can you get off the mower and have it run???
remove the drive belts from the motor. if it runs ok check your pulleys. one of them might be siezed.if it still dies chk the safety switch on the gear selecter and deck engage lever.
you have safty switch on the mower one or more are bad there are three of them
win you put in reverse some mower will cut off this is a safty device on some mower
Usually, that's an indication the the seat switch is not working. It's like getting off the seat without locking down the parking brake or getting off the seat with the baldes engaged, same result...engine dies.
