My forerunner 205 was charging just fine until I pressed the power button. The screen went blank and I cannot turn it on. Does this mean the battery needs to be replaced. If so, how does one go about replacing it.

Probably it is not due to the battery.
Your device is crashed. Perform soft reset : press & hold mode plus lap/reset keys for 10 seconds, release then press start long enough until device starts.

Did you install the software correctly? Because such errors appear usually when the update/upgrade is not finisher or was not done in a proper manner. If possible try to verify the device on another computer (a friend's) to see if the same problem appear. If the problem persists I'd say you've burned out your battery (hope not the hole Forerunner...!).
You need to contact Garmin and have them replace or repair the watch. If the watch is less than a year old, it will be under warranty. Older than a year it may be a repair or replace only situation, Garmin will have to determine that. It is not unusual for the forerunner series to have rechargeable batteries that die off.
The instructions say that you should "press and hold the ON" button (top left).
Perhaps you are not holding it on long enough (I think that a delay is built into the buttons to prevent accidental operation due to catching it on something).
This might just need a reset. To reset the Forerunner or Edge 205/305:
Connect the device to the computer using the USB cable
Press and hold the mode and reset (lap) buttons together for 10 seconds
Release and wait for 3 seconds
There should be some indication of battery charging (either Finished or In Process)
Power the device on while keeping it connected to the computer

Hey everyone. Just called Garmin and got it fixed. Sometimes the forerunner goes into power saver mode and needs to be reset
1. Hook up the usb cable and docking station to the computer.
2. Next, hook up your forerunner to the Docking station - It should pop up saying battery charging in progress
3. Leave it all hooked up and Hold the Mode and Lap/Reset Button together for 15 seconds - screen should go blank.
4. Let both go - should pop back up saying battery charging in progress.
5. Let Charge 20 minutes and it should be good to go.
"To power the unit back on, press the "Mode" and "Reset" buttons at the same time. Let go of those two buttons, press the power button, and the unit will turn back on."
If the unit is no longer displaying maps or lap data in the PC downloaded history ....perform a reset (as above) AFTER deleting all the Garmin HISTORY. This is done on the unit by navigating through HISTORY to "DELETE ALL" ---> now perform a soft reset.
