2001 yard machine by mtd it has a 17.5 hp engine with a 46 inch deck how do i replace the idler pulley it is all burned up from the heat of the belt and i tried wrenches but it turns above the pulley and i even put vixe grips to hold it still about it and an impact but still the bolt holding the pulley on will not lst go even though it does turn to the left

Possible bad bearings or misalignment of pulleys.

if the bearing in the idler goes bad the belt will slide off,most
likely the idler pulley or the idler assembly

Depending on which engine and which belt, you may have a tensioner that is spring loaded. It is pushed aside by using a large pry bar or 1/2 inch breaker bar.
The 4 cyl engine uses V belts, so you should have an idler pulley which is adjusted with a bolt. You loosen the bolt in the pulley then turn the adjusting bolt.

Locate the idler pulley to the left of the crankshaft pulley. The idler pulley bolts to the idler arm. The idler pulley is replaced with the arm because they are sold as one unit.

2 Place a 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the square hole on the face of the idler pulley and pull up on the handle. This releases tension on the Sonoma's serpentine belt. Pull the belt off the idler pulley, lower and remove the ratchet handle.

3 Remove the two bolts that secure the idler arm to the engine block using a socket and ratchet, and discard the old idler arm.

4 Place the new idler arm against the engine block and secure it using the socket and ratchet.

5 Put the ratchet driver into the square hole on the new idler pulley, pull up on the handle and place the serpentine belt over the pulley.

6 Lower and remove the ratchet handle.

Belt tensioner has to be changed.belt is staying loose and causing belt burn.It is also adviseable to change idler pully to.

The tools required are:
1/2-inch drive ratchet
2 - 1/2-inch drive 8-inch extensions
1/2-inch drive socket set

Please follow these steps to replace the serpentine belt on your 1999 Chrysler 300M:

1. Open the hood and prop it in place.

2. Locate the serpentine belt adjustable idler pulley on the front of the engine. This adjustable idler pulley will be closest to the top of the engine. Position a metric socket onto the ratchet and loosen the bolt in the center of the serpentine belt idler pulley.

3. Now please loosen the push bolt on the side of the idler pulley. It is a 15mm size and the push bolt on the side of the tensioner is 13mm. Pull off the old belt.

4. Loosen the tensioner pulley for the AC belt. The same steps need to be followed for this as well.

5. Next slip the AC belt on the back of the crank pulley and route it as per the diagram under the hood.

6. Now you need to tighten up the idler pully and the push bolt until the belt play is within factory specifications, then tighten the hub bolt in the center of the pulley as well.

7. The same thing needs to be done for the serpentine belt as well. Just ensure that you tighten up the bolts and have the specified play in the belt. Check the belt tension by pushing inward on the belt.

8. Crank the vehicle for about 15-20 seconds. Then turn it off and again check the tension in the belt. Adjust as necessary. You need to have about half an inch of play in the belt.

A burning belt usually indicates a seized idler pulley on those gm cars. You will have to find which pulley is seized and change, it before replacing the belt or the new belt will only burn and snap again.

Continental And Mark VIII With The 4.6L Engine
WARNING
Do not allow the drive belt tensioner to
snap back as damage to the drive belt tensioner or personal injury could result.

1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise with a breaker bar installed in
   the 3?8
   inch square hole in the drive belt tensioner.
   
2. Lift the drive belt over the idler pulley flange and remove the drive belt.
   To install:
   
   
3. Following the schematic on the decal under the hood, position the belt over
   the pulleys, except the idler pulley.
   
4. Rotate the tensioner as described above and install the belt on the idler.
   Ensure that all the V-grooves make proper contact with the pulleys.

Town Car With The 4.6L Engine

1. Install a breaker bar in the 1?2 in. square hole in the automatic tensioner arm.
   
2. Rotate the tensioner away from the belt with the breaker bar.
   
3. Lift the old belt over the alternator pulley flange and remove it.
   To install:
   
   
4. Position the new belt over all the pulleys, except the alternator pulley,
   rotate the tensioner as described above and install the belt on the alternator
   pulley. Refer to the belt routing illustration on the sticker located at the
   front of the engine compartment. Ensure that all the V-grooves and all the ribs
   on the belt properly contact the grooves on the pulleys.
   
5. Rotate the tensioner toward the belt and remove the breaker bar.

Removal & Installation

1.6L Engine
A/C Compressor Belt

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Loosen the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
3. Pivot the A/C compressor towards the engine in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
4. Remove the A/C compressor drive belt from the pulleys.

To install:

1. Properly route and install the A/C compressor drive belt on the A/C compressor, the power steering (if equipped), and the crankshaft pulleys.
2. Adjust the A/C compressor drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
3. Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 13-20 f t. lbs. (18-28 Nm).
4. Connect the negative battery cable.

Alternator Belt

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the power steering pump and the A/C compressor drive belt.
3. Loosen the generator mounting bolts.
4. Pivot the generator towards the engine and remove the accessory drive belt.

To install:

1. Properly route and install the generator drive belt on the pulleys.
2. Adjust the alternator drive belt to obtain 6-8 mm (0.24-0.32 in) deflection for a used belt or 5-6 mm (0.20-0.24 in) deflection for a new belt.
3. Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 17 ft. lbs. (23 Nm).
4. Install the power steering and the A/C compressor drive belt.
5. Connect the negative battery cable.

Power Steering Pump Belt

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Loosen the power steering pump mounting bolts.
3. Pivot the power steering pump towards the engine in order to relieve the tension on the belt.
4. Remove the power steering pump drive belt from the pulleys.

To install:

1. Properly route and install the power steering pump drive belt on the power steering pump and the crankshaft pulleys.
2. Adjust the power steering pump drive belt to obtain 6-9 mm (0.24-0.35 in) deflection.
3. Tighten the power steering pump mounting bolts to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
4. Connect the negative battery cable.
