The recoil starter on my Briggs & Stratton not engaging flywheel

The recoil starter on my Briggs & Stratton model 196432 engine is not engaging the clutch or turning the engine over to start. Should I start the troubleshooting by replacing the recoil starter, or by pulling off the flywheel shroud and inspecting the clutch/flywheel nut assembly? Thanks for your help. Andy

Most of this response was directed at the assumption that I have an electric startet on this engine, which I don't. Hence, it was of no practical value. Just gotta figure out how to address the recoil starter problem, i.e. pull rope starter not engaging. Andy

Andy, Hi, well I would start at the Starter myself, usually the thing called the "Bendix" spring jams up and stops it dead. Pull of the Starter, and power it up, off the unit. This will show you if it snaps in and out.
Sometimes a few judicious whacks with a soft hammer will sometimes free up the spring, if thats is indeed what's wrong. Anyway try that first. before any disassembly.
Make sure the Motor CAN actually be turned, by turning the flywheel, this should show you if the Motor is "Free" enough to move.
Also check ALL electrical connection to the starter. Use a meter and see if you are actually getting a voltage to the starter too. make sure your starter battery is good too.

I have a 3hp briggs & stratton//the pull rope pulls freely//it does not engage the engine and turn the engine over

You probably need to replace the starter recoil. This is not a very expensive fix. Just be aware that this problem is usually caused by having to pull the starter rope excessively because of some other starting problem. Once you replace the recoil, keep your engine running properly.

Starter spins but will not engage flywheel...

Check the flywheel for areas of damaged teeth also. Broken teeth on the starter drive gear may inticate damage to flywheel also.

How many different types of starter motors are there to suit a 12 hp ride on mower

First you have to have a flywheel that will support a starter. It must have a toothed flywheel. Second, the brand of motor. Briggs & Stratton, Tucumseh, Kohler, Onan, Wisconsin, ect. Was it originally electric start? Has battery tray, key switch, ect? You will need the Serial Number, Model Number which is on the "blower housing", or the recoil start housing on the top of the motor to replace with the correct starter. You probably can find one at any small engine repair shop, maybe a lower cost used starter. But you need the information above to obtain that. Model #, Serial #, Make, ect. If this mower wasn't electric start originally, this will be a major change. Flywheel, starter, wiring, battery, switch, and the like. Not for the faint of heart. It can be done, and has been, but will be difficult. If it is a Briggs and Stratton, you should find parts easy to access. And Tecumseh. And relatively economic.
