I have a similar unit and it will require getting into the gearbox which is not an inexpensive venture. Just to be sure though, make sure the shear pins in the axles are ok. Hopefully it is just a bent/broken shifter in the gearbox but a shop visit will still be expensive if you cant do it.

Craftsman rear tine tiller

If you cant move the tines by hand then I wouldn't think you sheared the pins, more like a gear box problem.

Tiller has been sitting up for some time and now won't engage into forward or reverse.

Hello. make sure all of your clevis pins are in place. And on mine even if i get it in gear...make sure that the "dead man" is cable connected for sure. Make sure when you squeeze the "safety stop" or "Run/engage" lever that it is actually moving a lever at the other end. If so? Then trans box is next to inspect. But that would have had to suffer a hard jam to damage that. And again with other people I've seen this a hundred times with rear tine tillers. Sometimes it just "cogs out" into a state of "bad mesh" with the gears and all that is needed is to push or pull the tiller a bit while you try to engage the shifter. The wheels just have to be rolled a tiny but and you'll free up the meshed gears. Happy tilling. Four thumbs up will truly be appreciated. Thanks. Joe

1980 pony rear tine tiller: when I put it into gear it just sits there and will suddenly lurch ahead uncontrollably.

That will happen when the tines are engaged while the wheels are in Neutral as the tines simply drive the whole machine forward without the drag of the wheels being in gear. If the wheel transmission is engaged and this is still happening, then you have need for repair.

Rear tine craftsman wont engage in any gear. feels like there in no connection from handle cable to engagement

That is correct "Only if the shifter cable isn't broken!" And if it is a linkage type, make sure all of your clevis pins are in place. And on mine even if i get it in gear...the "dead man" is cable connected for sure. Make sure when you squeeze the "safety stop" or "Run/engage" lever that it is actually moving a lever at the other end. If so? Then trans box is next to inspect. Sometimes it just "cogs out" into a state of "bad mesh" with the gears and all that is needed is to push or pull the tiller a bit while you try to engage the shifter. The wheels just got be rolled a tiny but and "Voila!" you've managed to free up the meshed gears to a state of freedom. Sometimes its that simple!

Tillers will turn but drive wheels will not engage. Noise can be heard.

Sounds like the drive gears are either stripped or the drive belt may be loose and rubbing, just not catching.

I have power to the tines but the wheels are locked

Tines only spin in the T position.with cutch engaged. If thats not it split the case and check to see the shift fork operating properly. Or that chains are not broke. NOTE This is a serious job!!!
