could be bad charger or time to replace the battery. lots of places sell new ipod batteries.
does it work if you leave it plugged into your computer for a few hours? if it does not then its a bad abttery.
Don't just change the hard drive,Change the motorboard as well.Different generation ipods use different boards and the hard drive from one won't always just plug in and work.
The reason a sad face appears is because the hard drive is not being read for what ever reason. Unfortunatly 90% or so need the hard drive replaced. Try these first, with the face down, try to start up the ipod while tapping on the back. A hard drive is designed exatly like an record player and sometimes the arm gets stuck. Also a soft reset (Menu and Middle button at the same time for about five seconds) can often jiggle the arm free. I have also seen low battery's cause sad faces but you would need a wall charger to test this and you would have seen signs of a low battery. Hope this helps.
Unhappy face http://www.zolved.com/synapse/view_content/19230 I have been told this is because the speaker wires are pushing against the laser motors. good luck
