There are two thermostats on my whirlpool model number 857554115010. Both should be replaced at the same time. I found a good video on http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/tumble-dryers I bought the parts from them and it worked.
Absolutely! Cold water must be available during the Dry Cycle because it sprays a fine mist on the Condenser to keep it cool. This is how it removes moisture from the hot, damp air circulating through the Dryer.
During the auto-drying cycle, the moisture sensor could be the problem.
If it also shuts off prematurely during the timed cycle, the operating thermostat could be turning the heaters off before the machine reaches operating temperature. Another possibility is that the operating thermostat does not turn off the heaters at all. When the machine heats up, it gets too hot and the high limit thermostat turns the dryer off.
Clothes will get very hot in the dry cycle, especially when the dryer is set to the warmest or hottest setting. There are controls built into the unit to prevent it from overheating to the point of causing a fire. The thermal fuse you replaced is one of them (and I assume you replaced a perfectly good fuse with a new one as you said it was very hot.). You might want to check the following if you feel the unit is getting too hot -
1) Make sure the lint screen is clean. 2) Make sure the hose between the back of the dryer and the exhaust duct at the wall wall is not kinked or full of lint. 3) Make sure the exhaust duct leading to outside of the house is clear and not full of lint.
