Check voltage to both coil and hall sender. should get battery voltage across two outer terminals on hall sender. battery voltage at black wire on coil. should get 5volts[pulsing] out put on center wire on hall sender. if input voltage ok but out put not, hall sender faulty. coil and fuel pump need an engine speed signal to activate.

My vw golf 4 2.0l won't rave but idles roughly

check spark plugs and distributor. look for bad wear and missing parts. It must be a faulty spark plug which is not igniting fuel in one cylinder. If you decide to replace the plugs its best to change all of them.

My 1990 vw golf starts, runs for 5 seconds, then stalls. It sounds like the fuel pump is working, the plugs are getting spark and the fuel is new enough. Pumping the gas pedal doesn't help to keep it going...

Checck the calibration of your fuel line. If this is perrfectly alright the fuel must be good enough too.
Then we turn to the electrics, check the spark, check the coil and the distribtuion. Clean all these points to check.
Use a tester for HT intensity.

if and when this problem reoccurs, you need to check if its spark or fuel problem.to check for spark carefully pull off the main lead to the distributor cap[center lead],hold it near the engine with a insulated pliers, have someone crank the engine and see if theres spark.if no spark try another tci unit[common failure] which should be located under the dash near the glove compartment,if its fuel check fuel pump or return valve could be stuck open..cheers

One of my cylinders for my VW golf is missing its fire.

Poor Injector causing the fuel to spit instead of spray

Burnt Valve on the exhaust or inlet allowing gases to be drawn in and out whe they should not be.

Injectors can be cleaned with an addative to the fuel

Burnt Valves need to be checked with a compression tester

Engine

First of all not sure what you mean by back realy!
Is there a engine check light on!
if not check there is ignitiion spark. oldschool way is to take a spark plug out and earth it while its still attached to the ht lead or coil plug and turn engine over and look for spark. No spark check coli pack resitance.and cank angle sensor. Check fuel by listening for fuel pump working when ignitiion key is turned. but better to use fuel pressure tester if avalible.smell and look at spark plugs for unburnt fuel which would indicate no spark but fuel. Put it this way as long as there is fuel, spark and a fully charged battery it should try and start. take one of these away and you got proplems

My golf tdi estate

Well, there are some hundreds reasons why the engine can stop. Common ones are:
Dirty fuel filters, problems with electronic distribution, spark plugs to be changed, broken fuel pump, battery contact not in place, blown head gasket, rarely also a problem with anti-theft alarm motor lock can cause same thing.
Generally, if the car motor stopped immediately, with no additional symptoms is likely a problem with distribution ( no spark).
If you have experience in servicing your car you should start from checking if there is spark, and if petrol is being pumped regularly.
Best thing to do is always having it checked by a mechanic.
