I have a Craftsman DLT 3000 riding lawn mower w/ a B & S 18.5HP OHV Intek Plus engine. Model: 917.273821
It starts fine and idles fine in the Neutral Med (default) or Low setting, but whenever I either try to increase the setting to Fast in Neutral or attempt moving forward or backward in Med/Low, the engine dies. Sometimes it will run in Fast temporarily, but it is usually runs rough (popping and sputtering with a lot of gray/black smoke). This started late last Fall - the only change that I made around that time was replacing the battery.
This morning I just replaced the oil, fuel, and air filters, as well as the spark plug, etc.. (basic maintenance) hoping that this might help, but it is still occurring. The new fuel filter filled up right away, so I assume that the fuel pump is OK(?) Any suggestions on what may be occurring and what I should try next?
I am a bit of a novice when it comes to working with small engines, but am willing to try anything before I need to possibly end up bringing it in for repair.
Thank you.

There is stuff in the main jet of the carby, hence it will idle perfectly, but as soon as you raise the revs it sputters and dies.
take off the fuel bowl unscrew the main jet blow through it so you can see through it, then refit. bingo
Sounds like the choke mechanism is stuck in closed position, causing a overly rich mixture, to check this removethe air filter cover, element and housing, there are two nuts and a 5/16 head screw somewhere that need to come off too, then pull off housing and you will be able to see the choke plate, it should only be closed when throttle lever is all the way up. when you determine if this is the pronlem or not you can email me if you want
