The car is chugging and also blowing out dark smoke

The car is chugging (kangarooing) and also blowing out dark smoke in a morning but seems to warm up and the chugging eventually subsides but makes me apprehensive about doing any distance in the vehicle, do you think it could be the fuel filter?
Thanks
Jo

I do not know much about this vehicle but if it is diesel it sounds like you should clean and or replace air filter and or glow plugs or grid heater... if it is a gas vehicle changing the fuel filter and checking spark plug gaps and plugs and wires also the cap and rotor may have where witch will cause intermittent and weak spark so you could be getting to much fuel and running rich. also if it has a catalytic converter you may want to check if it is partially clogged and if it is have it replaced hope this helps good luck

Testimonial: "Was very helpful as explored all the fuel options as I forgot to put that it was a diesel so not put the full details "

Motor is smoking in my '02 diamante, is it the gasket?

Smoke diagnostic is made by colour.
If u mean pistons head gasket, yes,it can smoke.
White (clear) water vapor.Ceck coolant level.Ceck engine oil colour by dipstick.

Black:runs rech on fuel (fuel filter/fuel lines/fuel mixture...)
Blue (whity):worn pistons rings.

Chears.
Tips:
Whity smoke before warming may be natural on cilli mornings with lot of compressure the engines just blows vapors.
Old oil/fuel residues in the exhaust tubing may blow smoke after heating the engine ,must track problem (...).
Black smoke on hitting the acceleration to the floor may be natural (overcharged) avoid sport driving style.

97 impreza 2.2l coupe on start up there is a engine knock until the car fully warms up and then its gone

THis could be several things. Start by making sure that there is nothing under the hood that is hitting the belts or pulleys. Check the oil level. If the oil level is low, add enough to top it off according to the dipstick. If the oil is okay, look to see if it is dark, thin and runny. If so, change it and the filter. If that is all okay, it could be a valve or lifter. Watch for oily spots to show up on the rear bumper which would indicate that you are blowing oil out the bottom of the engine - not a good thing. Also watch for smoke coming out the tailpipe after the car is hot - don't confuse steam in the early morning's cool air with smoke.

06 superduty f350 has trouble starting on damp cool mornings runs ine other wise .When starting blows black smoke and miss firing for about 5 to 10 min then runs great all day any solutions

Try having someone else start the vehicle in a dark place while you look at the motor compartment. It sounds like a shorting out electrical problem. You might be able to see fire shorting to the engine block in the dark.

My 1996 saab 9000 cs has started smoking badly upon warm up. After the car is warmed up it does not smoke at all. The smoke seems to be oil and I am losing some oil. It started doing this all of a sudden.

the valve seals in the motor are worn and letting oil seep into the cylinders when the vehicle sets overnight. when you start it in the morning it burns off the collected oil.. have oil seals replaced if you are parcial to your car....

Black smoke

with only that little bit of info., i'll guess at spark plugs and a mass airflow sensor. is the engine lite on? what color is the smoke? maybe even coolant temp switch.
