i am researching this for you , it appears that the (tk-3160) has the most distance, but the (tk-2160) does have an antenna up grade that can increase the distance, my personal opinion is that Motorola radios are the way to go. but i'll get back with you in a little bit, on what you can do to increase the performance of you radios.i do have the manual if you need it.
Short answer is Yes, do the following: join yahoo group specific to your radio Make/Model, give techs there all the info you can, and they'll help you through the process of recovery. While there you will find heaps of advice and very useful info plus, you can download manuals, schematics and more for your radio and best of all this cost $0.00, that's right, Free.
There is no way you will be able to unlock your radio. If you are lucky and the dealer left the "Cloning" Option checked in programmation you *should* be able to clone it with your other TK-7160 with a Cloning Cable.
If this does not work, you'll need to contact Kenwood and by Serial # they will tell you who was the original dealer. Then, contact the dealer and ask for the PW or maybe they'll unlock it for you for 20$-30$.
If the dealer is not the last person who put a PW in the unit, kenwood will have to do it. (~80$-100$.)
