Make sure you're not in the macro mode. There's a slide switch on the end of the camera, near the USB socket. Set this switch to the mountain position.
Also bear in mind that the flash is for still photos only, not for videos.

If it did play sound, then there was something seriously wrong with the camera. The ViviCam 8018 does not record any sound in video mode. You can add a soundtrack using video-editing software on a computer, but you cannot record one on the camera.

There is a switch on the side of the camera that needs to be in down position (scenery) for the camera to flash. Worked for me.
