Re: changed starter in 96 sunfire now, cranks but will
Try turning the key to the on position three times, then leave it on the third time and wait about fifteen minutes for the security light to stop flashing. then turn the key off and try to start it.

Sure it is not getting any fuel? Then that is the problem. Check out fuel delivery system and components such as fuel pump, filter, injectors being fired, etc.
If the Vat system was activated the car would start but then almost right away after wards shut the engine down. But if you have had the battery disconnected you might just want to check out resetting it for "in case."
You need to find out if the fuel pump is working, getting gas up to the engine. If the pump is working and seen to have good fuel pressure, check ignition by checking for spark.. To work, the engine needs, you know, gas, air, spark, and compression. Why people say, check for gas, check for spark.
This could indicate a weak fuel pump or clogged pump strainer. I would start by replacing the fuel filter since this should be done every two years. The fuel pressure bleeds off after some time so the pump has to try to build the pressure back up on a cold start. This is the cheapest and easiest fix to try first.
check spark plug wires and coils for moistore put some lube on the coil wires check for spark after it wont start if itll crank but not start its 1 of 2 thinks no spark or no fuel usally when the coils get too wet they wont allow spark to come through or will cause it to arc
Change the coolant sensor, it is stuck in advanced mode causing the engine timing to be out of sinc. Do not over tighten the sensor. About 5ft.lbs is enough. Good luck!
Sounds like you got a little "Bad" Fuel in there. Sometimes fuel from Cheaper Stations can get Condensation in the Tanks witch Transfers to your Gas Tank and will Clog up the Fuel System. Try to get to a Good Station and Fill up Then get a Can of "B12 Chemtool" and pour it in the Gas Tank. You can get it at Wal-Mart or any Auto Parts Store. Let Me Know!
has the starter recall be done to the car yet if so it should have relay added to syatem and starter wire cut inhave with purple wire run to small wire on starter.
I have had the exact same problem. There is an ignition lock that probably went off. There is a fuse box under the hood. The fuse that says ignition on it pull it out and put it back in. This should reset the ignition lock. Its a safety feature because the car thinks that someone was trying to tamper with it.
the fuel pump will show failure usally under load. when the car needs more gas. should idle fine but when you accelerate it will putt. hope it helps. maybe a starter cylinoid. you said it doesnt crank? if it does crank always check spark and fuel first. could be cps.(crankshaft position sensor)
