Same problem: DVD, CD and tuner works fine but when the tv is on surround sound it emits a high pitched sound.

I had this problem. I (after some time) localized it as related to the FM / AM tuner funtion. By changing the FM station to one with excellent reception and then switching back to say Video 1 I could eliminate the whine. I also had to play around with different FM antenna connections on rear of unit to get there. Brad

Ditto to the above. After 4 years of good use, all of a sudden, I got the whine when viewing TV in surround. DVDS still have the surround quite clearly, but the Video 1 & 2 are like fingernails on a chalkboard. Will Try Brad's fix.

Same problem, issued appeared for first 30 second when unit was turned on, now it is on all the time. Went to Video 2 no change. Intresting is that it bother my wife and I, but my kids do not seems to care.

I have the Dream System disconnected presently and awaiting a solution.

I am having the exact same problem. High pitched squeal starting in first 5 minutes after switching ON. I called the Sony customer service and they are saying they are hearing this problem for the first time for this unit. Infact the customer service rep. was referring to the central defect database for this unit.

This is the second problem with this unit. The first one I had was that the DVDs got struck inside and the unit will always go to Standby mode when I power off. So if I have to use this unit, I need to power off by pulling the electric plug off the outlet and the power it ON again.

Anybody know of any place (like BBB) for complaining this kind of mass manufactured defective units?

I was a great loyal Sony fan before this unit. I would hesitate to buy another product branded "Sony".

Same problem with the whine. Has anyone found a solution? Has anyone had it "fixed" at a service center?

  • abackstrom Oct 21, 2008

Product Sony DAV-FC9 System high pitched whine System is 5 years old and it started about 2 weeks ago, found if you mutted the sound for 5 to 10 min it went away. Had the disc ejection problem also but Sont fixed it as it was under warranty.

Will try Brad's idea and get a good reception on the tuner although I don't use the tuner much.

I have the same high pitched squealing sound from my sony dav-fc7 system which is there for minimally 10 minutes however, it is intermittent? If I disconnect the FM antenna it gets worse.......I did not see Brad's suggested fix...where can I find this?

Same problem... high-pitched noice when on video 1 or video two, but only when I am not watching anything on TV. Sounds great when it running, but you turn off the tv and leave on the stereo and after about 3 seconds, the noice starts.

  • bwalsh668 Jan 15, 2009

I have the exact same problem on video 1 and video 2 but not on the other channels

  • Anonymous Feb 10, 2009

I have DAV-FC, also with a high pitch whine on all inputs but dvd.

However, when I can leave it on for a while (5-10 mins) the whine disappears.

THANK YOU Guest (4/10/08)!!!
That was exactly what I needed! We have had our system for 4.5 years and suddenly, the FM feedback on everything, but DVD and Radio! Your fix helped. Once I set all my presets (at least the current one) to a clear station, the feedback stopped. Hallelujah!! We can enjoy this piece of junk once again! ;)

I switched to the optical connection as well and that solved the problem for me. It is now working great!

I have an optical connection from my TV to Sony Surround sound and sometims makes a high pitch squealing noise. Why is this?

Had this problem for over 6 months. Brad's fix worked for a couple months but then it started all over. So recently, I switched the connections from the analog cables to the fiber optic connection (had to get a different cable box) and the feedback is completely gone, works just like new.

SOURCE: high-pitched sound when using surround sound

I had the same problem, check your wires on the back of the tv and make sure your, red, yellow and white wires are in the correct holes. What kind of tv do you have, as I have an Ilo, and it has like 15 different plugs in the back, you may have to get you book out and make sure you have it in the correct hole on the back of the tv... I hope this helps....

I would guess this model is over two years old. not sure how much you paid, but target sells a decent surround sound blue ray system for just under 300. i got it. it works great, streams netflix movies an even has an internet radio system in it.

if you dont wanna do that, and have made sure that you have tried brand new cds, another option is to play cds on a cheap cd player hooked into your surround sound. it can go in any input on the back with an adaptor you can buy at radio shack, or many of them have an input in the front.

they used to make a cd lens cleaner, not sure if they still exist. it was a tiny brush hooked onto a cd that you put in and it cleaned up the lens.

bottom line is that it makes little to no sense to me that it would play dvds and not cds. i would assume that they both use the same lens to read the device.

I have rca home theater system rtd215 plays dvds fine but no sound when im watching tv programs i have no cable box just the jacks on my tv [52 projection screen phillips] and i tried hooking them into the...

This reson you are not hearing any "TV AUDIO" through your RCA surround system would be due to your tv sound output not being connected to an audio input into your surround system. You can hear DVDs,CDs and radio possibly mp3 if connected, as these are built in to the amplifier which the speakers connect to.
If the tv has a Line out (via phono plugs) and NOT via headphone out, connect it to an audio input on the RCA surround system. If the RCA has no other available inputs, well....there ain't a lot you can do but watch CSI with the sound from the TV and then Star Wars (for example) through the TV and Surround system.

Certain dvds lose the surround sound

if you are playing older or burnt dvds then chances are they were recorded using only 2 channel or stereo instead of 5.1,6.1 or 7.1 hope this is your solution

How to create surround effect on cds/dvds which are not recorded on surround technology on home theatre dav dz 777

There is no way to do this in a controlled manner without re-mastering the disc, an unrealistic option.

However, there is a very simple way to extract the out-of-phase portion of a stereo recording, which can yield a quasi-surround sound effect.

To get this effect, connect an additional rear speaker to the positive ( + ) connection of the right speaker output and the negative ( - ) connection of the left speaker output.

Please keep in mind that this only works with a stereophonic (not mono) source and is fairly subtle.

Make sure the speaker you use is at least 8 ohms.

This is an old trick that pre-dates surround sound and works with music CD's too.

This set-up will probably degrade the sound of a true Surround-Sound recording so consider wiring a simple switch to disconnect the additional rear speaker when not in use.

Hope this helps.

Did you try hitting the Doby Digital button? That is supposed to produce "fake" surround sound from sources which don't have surround sound like a tv.

How to get sound through speakers with tv and not just dvds

Just wire your TV audio out to one of the receivers (DVD player) audio in and select AUX when you want the TV sound to play through the surround sound. You also might want to turn the volume down or off on your TV to get the full surround sound feeling, but that's your call.
