What does the code 1686 mean for a jeep grand cherokee

you have dash lamps acting funny?
diesel engine? or gas, and what displacement? 4.0 , 4.7
P1686

did the immo lamp glow.
did you scan the PCM and see if 1685 (wrong key code)
1686, rigth out of fsm

Trouble Code: P1686 4.7L
No SKIM Bus Messages Received
Number of Trips to Set Code: 1
PCM details.
Trouble Code Conditions:
Engine started; and the PCM did not detect any MIC (I/P Cluster) messages over the Data Bus circuit for 20 seconds.
Possible Causes:
  • Data Bus circuit from MIC to the PCM is damaged or it is open
  • Instrument Cluster is damaged or has failed
  • PCM unable to communicate with the Instrument Cluster
  • PCM has failed
this means, the PCM can not talk to the I/P cluster puter.
comm fail.
even wilder guess is PCM talks to KEY via cluster so if cluster dead
so be key.
bad fuses ?

the FSm dont cover defeating any alrarms or IMMO less crooks read it. so...... google it.

Have ford s-max with dtc code F00616 what does if mean?

It is a common misconception that the instrument cluster self test gives DTC's for the engine management system, it provides cluster related DTC's on test 10 of the cluster self test, DTC should be displayed above the code, these will be displayed at 1 second intervals, once you press OK again the cluster will scroll to the next test, the format of the codes shown in the cluster is designed for Ford engineering and can only be translated into usable codes by Ford IDS.

The only way to find out why the engine management light is on is to have a scan of the engine management control module carried out using an appropriate code reader, this will give you the standard EOBD codes for example a catalyst efficiency code would show P0420. If you want to do this on a DIY basis then cheap code readers are available on the internet for around $75.00, these code readers also reset the light after the fault has been fixed. if this was helpful please leave me good feedback

If it's in the cluster, see procedure below for removing cluster. If this isn't what you needed, please get back to me.

CAUTION All models covered by this guide are be equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system, which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SIR components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column and instrument panel, disable the SIR, as described in this section.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Disarm the SIR system, as outlined in this section.
  2. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate using the following procedure:
    1. Remove the instrument panel access hole covers from the instrument panel using a small flat-bladed tool.
    2. Remove the screws from each end of the instrument panel cluster trim plate.
    3. Remove the screw(s) from the lower edge of the right side of the trim plate.
    4. Open the instrument panel compartment (glove box) door.
    5. Pull the right lower trim panel plate from the instrument panel.
    6. Pull the steering column tilt lever and tilt the steering column to its lowest position.
    7. Grasp the instrument panel cluster trim plate at the right edge and slowly pull, working to the left to release the retainer clips. Remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate from the vehicle.

      1. Remove the push-pin retainers from the top of the cluster.
      2. Rotate the instrument cluster rearward and disengage the locating pins on the bottom of the cluster from the instrument panel. Detach the electrical connectors and remove the instrument cluster from the vehicle.
      3. Installation is the reverse of the removal process. Use care to make sure all installation clips are properly located. Do not over-tighten any screws or they could force their way through their holes and the panel will not be held properly. Squeaks and rattles may develop later.

The word 'security'comes on when i try to start the car.i wait the three minutes it still won't start and then say's 'start in 3minutes.' i try to start it and after the third time it will start. i will...

The best thing to do right now is run a self diagnostic check to extract the trouble codes.

On these cars, no extra equipment is needed as it is all built in.

To check for diagnostic trouble codes do the following.

Turn ignition to "ON." (do not start the car).
Depress the "OFF" and "WARMER" buttons on the Climate Control Center (CCC) simultaneously and hold until the segment check appears on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

After entering On-Board Diagnostics, a segment check is automatically performed and then any trouble code stored in computer memory will be displayed. Codes may be stored for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Air Conditioning Programer (ACP), Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) Traction Control System (TCS) or Road Sensing Suspension (RSS) systems.

Each trouble code consists of the system abbreviation: (E: Engine), (P: PCM), (I: IPC), (A: ACP), (R: SIR), (T: TCS), (S: RSS), a three digit code identifier, and the letter C or H. All codes for each system are displayed together, in the order of their three digit number (lowest first). The final digit of the code, a "C" or "H" is used to indicate whether the code is Current or History. A "C" means the fault was still present the last time the diagnostic test was run, while "H" means the failure was not present the last time the code was tested for.

Write down the codes as they are displayed, you may need to run the check several times because they can flash by pretty quickly so you may miss some.
post the codes on here so we can get some idea of what the problem might be. Then you can go to your mechanic armed with this knowledge.
