SOURCE: dvd player will not read disk
have you tried getting a lense cleaner as they sometimes get alot of dust and will stop signal from disk to the laser if this dont solve the prolbem then you are looking at replacing the laser unit itself if the cleaning dont work and you think you are capable of taking the casing off make sure you switch it off first this should send the laser to the center of the laser tray if you take the case off and it is not in the center it might just be that it has got jammed now sometimes gently pushing it back to the middle will get it working again if it is already in the middle then it could be that the laser needs replacing but if not in middle push gently dont gerk it it should be quite stiff to push any way when you push back to middle try a disk with the casing off but please make sure you dont touch anything whislt it is plugged in if nothing works then it probably is the laser but before you do anything as soon as you get the case off switch it on and put a dvd in and make sure the disk is spinning if not laser unit is nakered and need replacing let me know how you get on hope this is some help to you

FIRST UNPLUG THE UNIT FROM POWER !!!!! The problem is dirt/dust/****/crud/stuff on the tiny, little ***** laser lens. Remove the case screws ( 2 on each side, some in the back) with a correct size driver. The cover must be pulled open at the bottom, side to side a tiny bit ( use a hand on each side) to allow the cover to lift up at the rear, it must come up quite a bit as if it is hinged at the front and THEN pulled back out of the front panel. Set the cover to the side. The DVD reader/Burner is covered with a small black cover, it is held on with two TINY screws, STOP!!!! Get yourself the CORRECT size driver at Fry's or Radio Shack, DO NOT get cheap here!!! Remove the two screws and find the two plastic grip tabs, push them to release and lift the cover. There is the laser! It is a tiny blue lens about the same diameter as the tiny screws. find a very, very well washed CLEAN 100% cotton T-shirt. The softer the better, get 70% or higher rubbing alcohol, pull the fabric over the tip of the finger and wet with the alcohol. VERY GENTLY wipe the lens 4 to 5 wipes and the 3 wipes with a dry spot. That should clean the lens. USE NOTHING ELSE!!!!!! The lens tracks back and forth on two tiny bars. The stuff I use is WD-40 wet on a Q-tip swab. Go to a safe place to spray the WD-40 on the Q-tip. The lube should drip. With the Q-tip apply the lube to the tiny bars at the ponts of rider contacts and wipe the bars too. Put the top of the burner back> BE CAREFUL!! Use a magnet driver and then repower and try to read a known good dvd. You will have to do this more in the future, you understand, dist dirt etc in the air. Put the top back on. Enjoy.

You can try cleaning the video tape heads. The vcr has 2 different heads. One for audio which is fixed and a drum head for video with 2 heads on it that rotate. The best way to clean them is to take a lint free cloth ad wrap it tightly around your finger. Put some alcohol on the cloth and place it on the drum. Then rotate the drum as you hold your finger against the drum. DO NOT move your finger up and down as you can brake the head off. The other option is to go buy a head cleaning stick. It's a piece of chamie on a plastic tongue depressor. I've cleaned hundreds of them with my finger though. You can clean the whole tape path with the rag. Good Luck.

you can only use imation or verbatim DVD+R. No other DVD's will work. I use exclusively the IMATION DVD's. Easily recognized by the logo on the disc package, it looks like the old movie reels.
