I have an Amana bottom freezer. The freezer door was left slightly open Now there is frost everywhere. Is this what is supposed to happen? If not, what could be wrong and how do I defrost the freezer
Yes it is... The warm outside air has caused condensation inside the freezer then ther temp of the freezer has frozed it.Like when you set a can of coke out from the refrig it sweats and then the freezer frezzes it.........The best way to unthaw it is with a hair dryer hope this helps or you could unplug it for 12hours or so but in both cases have some towels ready to soak up the water hope this helps

If the door does not shut correctly, humidity enters the unit and condenses inside. The defrost function is not designed to work properly under such a condition.
Ice (frost) builds up around the cooling coils, and actually insulates them, so you don't get good cooling. When you unplug the unit, the frost melts, runs into the bottom tray beneath the unit (can't see it).
When you turn it back on it cools like it should until the frost builds up again. You need a good gasket and a door that is adjusted properly. You also need the unit level at least side to side, but front to back also is preferable.
The unit has front leveling feet, and the back usually adjusts itself with self-leveling feet. The adjustments for the door are metal bars inside it, behind the inside storage panel.
The hinges are also adjustable. Sometimes the door sags from heavy things stored inside it. You must loosen the hinges a bit, lift the door and hold it while you tighten the hinges.
Sometimes the unit can be unsalvagable, because it's been situated incorrectly for so long that it's permanently bent out of square.
I have this problem as well, only nobody is leaving anything open. The defroster is defective of these things and the duct between the fridge and freezer gets frozen over and the cold air can't get in the fridge, so the freezer keeps working until it's blue in the face.
try checking the freezer door seal.
if slight gap anywhere around the door seal drawer fronts will frost up.
warm seal up with hair dryer and ease seal out with your hands..
problem often happens with door reversal.
your air damper is open,
or your door is not closing properly
if you door was even slightly ajar you would have frost as well
check you air damer it may be stuck open
make sure there is no frost buildup behinde the freezer back panal and the ducts to the frig are clear. Leaving the door open will make a lot of frost and diminish the cooling capacity. Eric
After several hours working and moving the door, I was able to slide open the door. Found out that the ice maker was leaking and the water was in the bottom an it frozen and that was stopping the door to open.
