My throttle position markings have worn off. Is start position to the front or rear? It cranks in both but quickly dies.

Possibly a bad coil. As they wear they get hot and fail to work properly, when they cool down they will operate properly again till they get hot during the next use.

Worn spark plugs out of gap setting they can't maitain sparking from heat the electrodes move and there's to much air gap for ignition spark and the motor dies 5 mins. Later it starts right up like nothings wrong drive around slow at 25 mph and as soon as you raise up your speed engine stumbles and dies

check throttle position sensor

It's on the block but check by spraying fuel into the throttle body if it starts there's a fuel issue like the pump relay fuse if it doesn't start your idle air control valve or throttle position sensor maybe bad it's rare for the crank sensor but it's a 98 so 20 years old it could be but the other sensors mentioned are more common the crank sensor is a magnetic pulse but the sensors for idle and position have contacts inside that can become worn-out and break contact resulting in a no start condition

What is the fuel pump pressure? When you put the throttle down, there is not enough fuel to match the air inlet and it dies.

check you fuel pressure to see if you are getting plenty of fuel.could be a defective or worn out fuel pump.sounds like its not getting enough fuel and pump is only suppling enough to start it.hope this helps

Have you checked the throttle position sensor (TPS)?

You replaced all those sensor,Your problem is mechanical, The timing may have slipped.If the timing belt is good and all on the mark,how the crank position sensor, The crank get its signal from the transmission flywheel,if the flywheel is cracked and lost its position then it does exactly what you describe . You either have a cracked flywheel or a jumped timing belt.The exhaust can be plugged also

When on soft dirt or gravel, engage the 4wd. From a stop position, accelerate quickly to spin the tires. Inspect your starting position for spin marks. There should be marks in the dirt or gravel on opposite sides from front to rear. The rear may have two marks depending on limited slip or posi rear end.

crank shaft position sensor is most likely cause. Do check ignition and fuel pump relays with an ohmmeter to make sure they are not faulty. Check power to ignition module. You can also check crank sensor with the ohmmeter. Check all vacuum hose and also check throttle position sensor.
