Need to change pull rope on Poulan Pro Weedeater

I have a Poulan Pro 466XT weed trimmer. I need to replace the pull rope (starter rope).
The starter rope assembly is on the inside front of the yellow plastic cover on the front of the engine assembly. I've disassembled the unit to where i could remove the yellow plastic cover, but there's what appears to be a clutch assembly on the front that has to come off & I cannot see how to take this assembly off. The shaft on it (that connects to the drive cable on the handle) is hollow & I've tried different screw drivers and allen wrenches, but nothing seems to want to grab properly. I cannot clearly see what's inside the shaft either.
How do i get this assembly off?

I appreciate any help anyone can offer,
Mike

Sounds like you are trying to remove the drum assembly; try a torx driver or a phillips screwdriver. There is a srew that hold that drum on and the bolt is in that black hole.

Testimonial: "read suggetions & took another look. Found a small flat blade screw driver would work. Appreciate the help"

If this is the same as the Pro 6 model, the clutch assembly is reverse threaded so turn it clockwise to remove. You must prevent the motor from turn while doing this. I used a heavy screwdriver up through the vent holes to hold it in place. Hope this helps.

Sounds like the starter dogs are broken. They are little plastic teeth that engage to turn the engine when you pull the cord. You'll need to replace the whole starter assembly to fix this.

My husband took his Poulan Pro 31 cc weed eater/trimmer apart and now needs an engine diagram to put it back together. Where can I get a downloadable one ?

Go to the Poulan web page http://www.poulanpro.com/node6556.aspx and enter the model number of the string trimmer. If the trimmer is a Weed Eater brand (owned by Poulan) then go to this page http://www.weedeater.com/node6507.aspx. I think you can also locate older model manuals in their archives.

Broken rop on weedeater gas trimmer

There is a spring under the starter spool, the one with the rope on it, leave the spring ALONE, Just take the spool and replace the rope as it is. You take the spool off, put the new rope on the spool, place the spool onto the spring and by holding one end of the rope straight up in one of the slots on the spool, go as many times as you can. When you have it as tight as it can go, hold your thumb down on the spool. Insert the rope through the hole available, grab the rope on the other side of the hole, (outside the casing). Hold the rope and S-L-O-W-L-Y allow the rope to retract. If it finishes before the rope runs out, pull on the rope and install the handle. If it tries to go beyond, hold the rope and install the handle there. Hope you have luck. Remember, leave the spring alone...Lee
