theres a safety switch to keep you from mowing in reverse
to bypass follow shift lever down you will see two yellow wires un plug those. it will now mow in reverse
There is probably a switch in the reverse lever that shuts of the mower. It is probably a normally open switch so when you pull the lever to reverse it pushes the switch closed killing the engine. If you unplug the switch or cut the wires going to it, it would never think it is in reverse and you could always mow.
Have you been mowing high grass, and how long has the belt been on? if you have mowed tall grass or belt is older than 2 years old it needs replaced, most don't realize how much a belt stretches from mowing tall grass. I hope this has been helpful.
It sounds as if you have bad/old fuel. And if the fuel is fresh, than you may have water in the tank. If you have been mowing in an area that is very dusty, the air filter may be clogged or there may be dirt in the carburetor. It's gonna have to be a process of elimination.
Once a belt has slipped to the point of "smoking" it is time to replace it. It will have a worn spot on it that will cause a vibration throughout your entire tractor when you are driving in addition to being weak at the burned point
