Gas smell strong gas smell coming from volvo s80 in my garage.

a rough guess as to the excessive fuel smell and smoking < I would say that the seal under the injector tip is damaged or missing and that fuel is bypassing the injector
probably now flooded and that is why it will not start
lean codes are generally caused by a faulty HO2S sensor ( heated oxygen sensor) in the exhaust manifold/s before the cat converter/s
other possible causes are MAF/VAF sensor faults and low fuel pressures

Frequent problem with throttle body. I replaced mine, and it runs like new!

code p0455 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system--large leak detected.===causes--hose connections--intake leak-- EVAP canister --EVAP canister purge valve. There is a possibility that the filler hose to the tank is loose or cracked and when you filled the tank it is running out of the cracked hose. The same applies to the hoses from the tank to the canister and back from the fuel manifold. I would pay attention to the purge valve as if it is not working then fuel smells become a problem also

if you got a new pump the sending unit should of come with it in a unit so its probly a ground wire off the fuel tank thats rusted

Hello, I know you posted this question almost a year ago and I don't know if you have your answer yet. I just wanted to let you know we had a similar problem after purchasing a used 2003 Volvo XC90 earlier this year for my daughter to drive around, and found out that there was an outstanding recall on it due to the fumes from the gas tank. It had something to do with the fuel lines, and and the fuel tank, and being in a southern state (in which we are) I would suggest checking to see if your car falls into this category.

Hold gas pedal to floor and see if it starts this is called clear flood mode.

the trans is goning to be expensive. 1999 and 2000 are the worst years of s80. PLAGUED with electrical and software problems. yes sure most of the problems have a fix now. but not free

you HAVE a gas leak, the best way for this problem is to use your senses of smell and sight.
Look for gas leaking at the same time smell for the strong smell of gas and locate the area.

Inoperative purge valve in EVAP system

this sounds like a gas pressure regulatur. a few minutes after starting,you start smelling fumes,and are getting bad gas mileage right?
