First, I'm not a Sears Tech (ahh, not Lowe's either.)
* Sears Parts; https://www.searspartsdirect.com/model-number/31522580/0247/0743000.html?searchType=modelSearch&q=31522580&searchTerm=31522580
* You can also look at the old belt and get the numbers off them. Check on Amazon.com for replacements.

    Thanks. I already have a belt for it; I just need to know how to put the belt on properly.

    First, Unplug sander from power.
    * to replace Sanding Belt; Remove power cord. Release belt tension by placing the front roller on a flat surface. Tip the sander up and press downward onto the face of the roller. This will tension the belt and you will hear a click which locks the roller in the open position. (may be a lever). Slide off the old belt. Insert new belt (note the direction arrows, if any) and return the leaver to normal (or release the front roller). Plug in sander and test. See links below for alignment issues.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rPzRk4D...
    * Alignment;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANLS1zyk...
    * to remove TIMING Belt; Remove one or two cover screws on the side of the belt housing. The bet will fall out if broken. If not then pull gently on the belt and spin the lower roller with your hand (NOT Power!) try to get the belt to crawl up and over the edge of the wheel. Keep turning till the belt comes out. To install a new timing belt. Just reverse the process. Attach belt and spin roller. Press the belt on the edge of the wheel and turn roller to have it crawl over and settle into the wheel. Replace cover and secure screws. Power up and test.
    * Tip, Spare belt can be attached to the cord near the plug end secured with a cable tie. (don't use wire as it may damage the cord or belt).

    Aloha, ukeboy57

try to rig the nozzle of a shop vac to the part where the bag would normally connect and run the sander simultaneously with vac for a few minutes and see if that helps

SOURCE: I need manual for Craftsman 315.11720 belt sander

On my model 315.11720 3"x21" Craftsman belt sander to change out sanding belts you push the front roller in until it clicks to lock in its retracted position (a pry bar may help here), switch out sanding belts then unscrew the tracking tensioner a bit on the opposite side with a allen wrench until the roller snaps back in place. I never remember anything about using a screw driver to force it back forward position again. Then readjust the tracking if necessary with a few short sanding load tests and you're good to go. Oil is dropped in the front roller center by removing the flat head screw - it should say "Oil Here" around the screw.

How do I change the sanding belt on my 7447 belt sander

To change the belt, you must release tension of the rollers by pushing the front roller straight back until you hear it click and lock in position to change paper. Remove old paper and replace with new paper. Make sure if new paper has directional arrows to install properly.
Now you must release the front roller to put tension on paper. To do this push the front roller from the side that has the adjustment screw. This will release the front roller and allow it to go back into position. Be careful as it pops back quickly and with some force.
Turn on sander and adjust centering of paper with adjustment screw found near the front and side of sander.

How do I release the lock on my Craftsman belt sander to lighten the belt. It's an old Model # 315.1172

I checked Searspartsdirect.com for that model number and they listed that number, but with an extra 0 at the right end. I couldn't find a belt release lever illustrated anywhere like that on my old Craftsman belt sander. On mine, you just flipped the lever either forward or back to release and tighten the belt. (still works great) There is a spring that pushes the front roller assembly forward when the lever is operated.
