Ip address in invalid on windows vista

All we need to do is to reset the router for about a minute, if we are still getting invalid IP which is 169.x.x.x then we need to temporarily assign an ip address on the computer.

How to assign IP address:
Windows XP
Step 1: Click Start, then Control Panel.
Step 2: When the Control Panel window opens, double-click Network Connections.
Step 3: Right-click Local Area Connection, then click Properties.
Step 4: When the Local Area Connection Properties window appears, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then Properties.
Step 5: Change the option from Obtain an IP address automatically to Use the following IP address and enter the following:

Make sure the IP Address you'll be assigning the computer has the same first three numbers as the Default Gateway and the last number can be any number between 2 and 99. In this example, our Default Gateway is 192.168.1.1, so the IP address that should be used must start with 192.168.1. In this example, the IP address that we'll assign is 192.168.1.50.
  • IP: "192.168.1.50"
  • Subnet Mask: "255.255.255.0"
  • Default Gateway: "192.168.1.1"
After assign static IP then click OK.

Step 6: If we are not getting any response from the router(like pinging the ip address of the router) then possible product is defective.

How do i find information about my address and port?

im guessing here you mean your ip addess and open ports on your computer right ??

ok firstly your computer uses 3 ip address
  1. loop back ,, 127.0.0.1 (slandered) for all computers , this is used for internal progressing and phrasing.
  2. a local ip address ,,This ip vaires what it is basically is the ip address given to your computer by your router ,, its the address that the router recgonises as your computer , so different computers connected to the same router have differect local address.. it usually starts with 192.168.XXX.XXX or 10.0.X.X
  3. Foreign / Internet Ip address, no matter what type of router this address varies for each router!!!!!. lets say you have 7 computer on the same router , each will have the same foreign address but different local address's.
PORTS !!!
will ports are used for different things for example web surfing is port 80, ftp is 21, different software uses cretin ports to allow computers to different machines over the internet or other network to interface with them directly..

Hope i explained all that simply,, well here is how you get the info u need..in all Operating systems the process is a bit different here i will outline 2 ways each,, for XP and for win vista / win 7.. ok lets get started..

XP..

to determine local ip address,,
  • click start , control panel
  • network / internet connections / network connections
  • double click on local area connection or what ever name u see..
  • click support,, there you go see your ip.. click details for more info
alternate method
  • double click on the network connection icon to the buttom right of your screen.. follow last step above

  • click start then run
  • type cmd and hit enter
  • type ipconfig /all and hit enter
that will list all the info about your connection for you..

ok ports in win XP

click start then run,, type cmd and hit enter
type netstat - n

that will list all ports / ip address that they are connection too..
the ports that you see are the open ports.. there is an alternat method to see it in the windows firewall setting but i did not list it since its most incomplete,, background processes dont show up there ,, like a virus..

skip to foreign address !!! BELOW

ok vista...or windows 7

start control panel
network
manage network connection / view or edit network connections
double click on local area network click support if necessary ,, you will see your ip address there (LOCAL)

  • OR ,, click start, in the run box type cmd and hit enter
  • type ipconfig /all hit enter
  • that will list your local address among other things..
PORTS ,, VISTA / WIN 7
click start
in the run box type cmd and hit enter
type netstat -n and hit enter,,
this will list all open ports and the ip address that they are connected to..

FOREIGN ADDRESS
this is easy.. go to http://www.whatismyip.com the address that shows up is your foreign address..

well I hope thats a Fixya, or at least a very helpful after all that typing it would be sad if i didnt answer your question or was wrong abou what you wanted to know.. good luck and let me know if you need any more help..
