If blade bolt is stipped remove pulley nut on top and tap down on it. Order a new mandrel shaft and reinstall as removed bearings bushings seals ect.

SOURCE: which way do you turn the crankshaft pulley bolt to loosen it?

It turns left (counterclockwise) to remove. An impact wrench is best if you can get one on it.

If you don't use an impact wrench, you may need to somehow keep the crank from turning when you loosen the bolt.

One way is to pull the belt tighter to put more tension on the crank pulley.

There are other creative ways I've used. If you have any trouble let me know.

SOURCE: cant remove wheel bearing assembly from the spindle 1996 chevy

check the front of the hub assembly, just to double check and see if there is a cap on it with a crown nut behind it. It should not be stuck to the spindle at all and this is the most likely cause. If there is a crown nut there, there will be a cotter pin you have to remove to take the nut off.

It concerns a john Deere x304 riding lawn mower. When moving throttle to high then back to low a long hesitation before dropping to low. When mower blades engaged it wont get to high revs. Hope you...

Check for debris in governor to throttle linkage at the carburetor. Check that throttle cable retention clamp is not loose.

Remove grass and debris from top of mower deck. Remove belt guards from top of deck if necessary to clean underneath spindle pulleys.

Mower leaves strip of grass unmowed in center of deck. This is a model X300 with newly sharpened blades

Check the center blade to make sure it spins freely when the deck belt has been removed. The spindle may have frozen up.

How to adjust tension on belt of John Deere Ride On D140

How to adjusted Cutting Deck Belt Tension

You do not say which size cutting deck you have. I will be writing about the 48", 3 blade cutting deck

The belt on this deck is self tensioned. The tension is provided by a spring attached to a moveable pulley on the deck. When the belt is in place you can manually force this pulley forward/backward and it will release the tension.

If the belt is off track, place the belt back around all the pulleys in the correct path, lastly force this spring loaded pulley forward/backward (depending on your deck, the direction is not important, the tension is) to get the belt around the pulley. If the belt is placed correctly, when you release the spring loaded pulley it will properly tension the belt.

Typically, these belts should not be jumping off. If yours is coming off frequently the belt may be worn. When they wear they get quite a bit longer, then the tension pulley cannot apply the correct tension. Rarely does the tension spring have to be replaced.

The other problem that causes belt jumping is worn spindles and stationary pulleys. The spindles are the most likely to need replacement. You can buy excellent replacements for JD spindles on Amazon for very reasonable prices. The following spindles are super replacement spindles for the 48" deck. They may very well be the same for smaller and larger decks; I have not researched that. Just search Amazon for Silver Streak # 285851.

Silver Streak # 285851 Spindle Assembly for JOHN DEERE GY21098, JOHN DEERE GY20962,

Need to change the spindles on model 917.273220 craftsman tractor

The job is much easier and safer with compressed air and an impact. I would try really hard to find someone with air to borrow but if no air is available then wedge a piece of 4x4 between the blade and deck to keep the blade from spinning. BEWARE, the board can pop out and the spinning blade can be dangerous. Remove the deck from the unit. Remove the pulley first, hold the blade with your hand ( only if you have air/ impact) to prevent the spindle from spinning. Note the washer under the pulley. Then remove the blade, then the spindle bolts. Most AYP replacement spindles now come pretapped but if not place spindle in a vice and use one of the old spindle bolts ( they are self tapping) to make threads in the mounting holes. Then mount the new spindle in reverse order being sure to instal the washer between the spindle housing and the pulley. Again hold the blade with one hand and securely tighten the pulley nut with an impact. Also the unit probably has a blade brake arm and the spring holder is mounted by one of the spindle mounting bolts. Pay attention to its positioning before removal. If you have a heavy duty replacement spindle the notch on the bracket may not fit the new spindle. with a file or grinding wheel enlarge the notch on the bracket to fit.

Why isn't the center blade on a john deere LX178

Of course with everything off, reach under the deck and turn the center blade by hand. If:
1. the blade turns by itself and nothing else moves, you need to tighten the retaining bolt more.
2. the blade, retaining bolt and drive shaft turn, check to see if the pulley above it is turning.
a. If the pulley turns freely check that the drive belt is going around it to power the blade.
b. If the blade turns with the drive shaft and the pulley doesn't, check that the pulley is still properly connected to the blade shaft. Some have a key in them that can split, others just have a bolt on top holding them tightly on the shaft.

if you take the pulley off, then the bolts that hold it to the deck it will drop through the deck, then may with a vice and a pipe wrench the you may be able to get off or replace the spindle. Hope this helps Tim

Mower blades froze up

Have you greased the bearings on the mower deck recently? Is there something jamming the blades?

Remove the deck and see if you can move the blades by hand. If you insist on not removing the deck to do this ... make sure the belt that drives the deck is not on the drive shaft of the motor to prevent accidental starting of the motor and instant mangling of your hand. If you can move all the blades, look for a faulty or worn out pulley on the deck. If the blades are frozen in their bearings, get replacement towers at your John Deere dealer or from a FixYa.com advertiser. If one is faulty or rusted ... replace them all ... as they are probably at or near the same condition. Do this job one time and do it correctly.
