Does this machine have a fuel cup on the bottom of the carb? If so take it off and clean it out real good and blow out the fuel jet. It may be the thing that holds the cup on. Try to blow it out or take a real fine wire and go through it. I have repaired a lot of engines this way. Just gets dirt in the valve. Be careful not to mess the float up when you do this. The reason it fires when you prime it is you force gasoline into the carb.

You need to check the fuel line for cracks/breaks. Check the fuel filter if it has one. If these two things are o.k., then you will need to clean the carb. It probably has debris in it.

It means that either not enough gas is getting into the engine. The gas you pump in when you prime is enough to start the engine but not to keep it going.

There could be several things that cause this.
1. Old fuel:
Solution: Replace the fuel. Dump out the old stuff. If it is a year old it won;t work.

2. A dirty carburetor:
Solution: Clean the carburetor.
Easy carb clean:
Pull the bowl off and use carb cleaning solution to clean it. (you can buy carb cleaning solution a Wal-Mart in the automotive section. I have also heard acetone will work but I have not tried it.) Make sure not to loose the little parts like the pin.

Better carb clean:
pull the carb off the machine and clean each part with carb cleaner. There is a youtube video someone else posted on how to do this.

3. Your gas/air flow is not adjusted properly.
To check:
Pull off or out the air filter. Try to start it.
Solution:
If the machine runs longer there are two options: The air filter is dirty so replace it, or the air flow is not adjusted proberly. There should be a screw like thing sometimes called the "main jet" that you turn to adjust the air flow. It is on the carburetor side or bottom.
If the machine dies faster or won't start there is probably too much air flow and by removing the filter you added more air. Adjust the "Main Jet" as above.

SOURCE: I have a Craftsman Lawn mower model # 917-376950 ;

there is a large silver screw directly below the air filter. unscrew it and look inside the cavity. there will be a spring visible. fish it out gently with a paper clip or similar. there will be a red plastic piece attached to the spring. this is the main jet. clean the little hole in the center with a shot of carb cleaner or compressed air. put the assembly back in [red piece first], then carefully put the screw back in [this is metal going into plastic]. it should fire up and run fine. if not, you will need to replace the float bowl assembly

SOURCE: My yard machines push lawn

Try removing the brass bolt that holds the float bowl on the carburetor and cleaning ALL the tiny holes in it. Use no metal objects on it as it is also the main jet of the carburetor. Carb/Choke Cleaner aerosol spray works well here. Pay close attention to real small holes near the top in the unthreaded portion of the bolt. Remember, no scraping with metal and no metal wires thru it.

SOURCE: I have a craftsman 5.5 push lawn mower it starts up but won't stay running:( I changed the air filter. What could the problem be?

it could be that the gas cap valve might be clogged theres a tiny hole in the middle of the gas cap. run a needle through it and it should unclog it.

Will not prime with primer bulb , can squirt gas in carb and get running then while running you push the primer button it chokes down the engine .

Does it stay running after you squirt fuel in the carb opening? If yes, then there may be a pin hole leak in the hose going from the fuel tank to the primer bulb and it is adding air to your carb.
Thanks

My lawn mower tries to start but then dies shortly thereafter.

Probably. Does it start after you push the primer and then die? If so, yes, it's the carb. For any more info, I'd have to have the model and type #'s off the engine. Dwain

I would push the prime button 3 or 4 times it starts then quiet

I took my carburetor off and blew it out with compressed air. Runs great now. Make sure to get all of it. Little screw on bottom has a hole in it too!

Lawn mower

i dont understand the pulling the button - do you mean push the primer button - if you mean primer button it sounds like the high speed jet in the carb is dirty and needs service- you can attempt to start and once engine fires have someone continually push primer to keep running it ma clear the blockage - did You check the fuel tank for any water ?
