No this is not normal.
There are many things that can cause this.
1st with engine running look under hood and listen for a sucking sound and look for a disconnected small vac hose they are about 1/4" thick. there all over so listen for leak and plug back in. thats #1 cause of shaking etc. BUT
I would get it tuned up. ASAP
New spark plugs, fuel and air filter, check timing, set idle speed etc.
Hope this helps let me know Mike
You don't say in your question as posted (as I write) just what year, brand and model vehicle you have.
IN any event it is not normal and I would recommend you have it checked out because from what you have described the car is
misfiring badly when idling.

I have power at the coils , have good compression , have you ever seen a crank pickup cause this problem?
SOURCE: 2002 camry le 4 cyl idles really really low,
This vehicle is equipped with an electronic throttle control motot that operates the throttle plate. and controls the idle if your throttle plate is carboned up if will decrease air flow into the engine causing a low idle. This is very common if your battery was replaced or disconnected.

Sounds like your o2 sensors are screwed up. there are 2 o2 sensors on the 1.8t (one before the catalytic converter and one after). The computer on your car uses data from the sensors to adjust the fuel mixture for your car. It sounds like it's running too rich which can cause detonation inside the piston. This is VERY bad for your pistons. Take it in to the shop and get OEM o2 sensors. Don't buy anything aftermarket.
