Extremely Loose steering column. Not just a little wiggle room, wheel moves up, down farther than normal tilt and left, right so far wheel touches wiper/lights/signal arms.

Never had any problems out of it. Last night turned left at stop sign and steering wheel moved pretty far up and to the left. Now it moves all over the place. Didn't sound like anything broke, No loud pops or cracks. A small piece of steel fell from column. It is about 3/4 inch long, as round as a dime, and has small threaded hole on the what appears to be the top. I think it's a pin of some sort but not sure.

SOURCE: loose steering on 2001 wrangler

I agree with Saint. When ever a lift is installed, the strain on all steering components is amplified. So is the play when a ball joint starts to go. Checking all ball joints for rigidity is needed. If you can move one easily by hand, replace it.

Have a look at the truck I'm standing in front of in my avatar. I've got some experience in this area. ; )

SOURCE: Windshield wipers and washers not working - fuse is good

I had this problem also. The wiper motor was good, but had a bad ground. On the bottom bolt there should be a metal mtab that gronds the motor to the firewall. If it's not making a good connection, it will not work. My new motor didn't work when I replaced it because of this also.

Is it a tilt if so you have to go farther down the column so you can get to the 3 screws that tighten the upper collar so it will not be loose and wiggle if this is your problem. good luck

Tilt steering wheel on 96 ford f150 pickup is loose and wiggles, need to re tighten, can you tell me the best way to do this?

What happens is that there are 3 or 4 small screw type bolts that come loose down by the tilt mechanism. As time goes on these little bolts get looser and looser and the column moves around more and more. You have to disassemble the column from the top downward to get to these and it's a fairly complicated job as there are a lot of small pieces, switches, and linkages that have to be put back together correctly so it will all work when you are done. I always put thread locker on these small bolts to prevent them from coming loose again. It's a fairly involved procedure to do this job the first few times so if you're not fully comfortable with it I would suggest having a good service facility do it for you. I usually can do one in a little over an hour, depending on how much cleaning I need to do to dirty/sticky column components.

My steering wheel moves up and down and left and right i dont know how to fix it or figure out whats wrong

If it is the tilt steering wheel, then you have two bolts near the tilt part of it that have backed out. You need some special tools to get to the bolts, but not too hard if you can get the tool to remove the snap ring that holds the plate on. If you don't have tilt, most likely the bearings in the steering column are bad, and you would need a new steering column.

I have a 1973 Camaro with the factory tilt steering column and it's starting to get loose. What does it take to fix this? Are there any part breakdown diagrams?

if you can, pull steering wheel, steering lock wheel(spring compressor needed, from auto parts store, free) pull signal switch (three screws) out far enogh to see tilt mechinizm, there are three black bolts to be tightened, if you wiggle the tilt column you should see them loose, a small socket will fit star shaped bolt heads

Steering wheel moves up and down too far.

the bolts that secure the tilt joint inside the column have come loose, wish I had a dime for everyone of these I have fixed! you must tear the column apart to fix this problem, it is best if you remove it from the car and put it in a large vise.
