What sort of batteries are you using??
I've got the same camera and it works best with Lithium AA batteries if you not using the bigger one.
Normal AA batteries won't work.

IMPORTANT:
Do not use the AC adapter included with the Kodak EasyShare camera dock or printer dock to power your camera.
I only can think of two reasons. The first, the battery does not have enough power. As a safety precaution it shuts itself down, to avoid damage to the saved pictures. Because if the voltage is to low, it can't write with 100% accuracy.
Second: something is blocking free movement of the lens. This could have a cause inside the lens barrel, and you won't see a thing. It also could be a minute damage on the outside of the lens. Or what sometimes happens while putting the camera on, you touch the lens barrel. I assume you did remove any lens cap attached to the camera.
So if you can't see any damage to the lens barrel, charge the battery and try again.
Try this: take out the memory card, then try to turn on the camera. My camera would not turn on even with new batteries. For a while I have been having issues with uploading as well. Suddenly it would no longer upload by plugging the camera into the laptop. However, taking out the memory card and plugging it directly into the laptop worked. The last time I did that, I put the memory card back into the camera while the camera was off. Then the camera would not turn on. I took the memory card back out, then turned on the camera and it came on just fine. Then I put the memory card back in with the camera on. So far so good.
Just use a 2GB "SD" card,,The Z650 will not accept any of the newer, faster cards available today. Just carry a spare, if you plan on using your camera for lots of pics/videos. Cheer's, Andy.
Kodak EasyShare Z650 Digital Camera has its own internal memory and its sd card also.Now you can connect the camera with the computer with the data cable .Now you can see the new hardware found and the open the camera images in computer .
I have one and my does not shut down right after I turn it on, but there is a battery save feature on it, You must have yours set to save the most battery... see if you can reset your save battery feature..

i have a kodak easyshareZ712 IS it is less than 2months old and it shuts off as soon as you turn it on. it comes on for about 1 second and shuts off. i have bought new batteries and it doesn't help
If you have an EasyShare printer dock or AC adapter, try those. If not, you will have to have it repaired, unless your battery is dead or the connections in the battery bay have a foreign object or corrosion blocking the connection.
