To Stephen my parking lights work though. Just not my brake lights as well emergency brake to.

So if the parking lights work, its not a ground problem. I would check out the turn signal switch next.

  • Linsey Aug 29, 2015

And where is that located at?

  • Linsey Aug 29, 2015

So the parking lights and brake lights ground wire is it the same wire or different wire. I know sometimes when I signal left it goes really fast but when it does that it's not really signaling so I have to do it off and on so it signals normal.

All of the tail lamps use one ground wire. The fast blinking is usually because one bulb is working but not the other - such as the rear bulb but not the front. The turn signal switch is inside the column attached to the lever.

So most likely from what I have said probably turn signal switch or could it b the wiring somewhere? They come on every so often. And light bulbs have been replaced. All fuses are good as well.

On most models the brake light circuit runs thru the turn signal switch. The third brake light does not. So it could be a problem with the turn signal switch.
A ground problem would also affect the parking lights.

Grounds could affect the parking lights, but the brake lights have there own ground wires. They run to the same spot as the parking lights. Usually on the driver side. Mounted to the frame at the rear of the vehicle. Check this first, then replace the turn signal switch. You need an Ohm meter to check the wires. Less than 5 ohms is good.

SOURCE: 1998 chevy lumina brake lights intermittent.

This is a classic example of turn signal switch failure. On GM vehicles with a multi-function turn signal switch and combination stop/turn/tail lights (all rear lights are behind red colored lenses except for back-up lights) The brake light power is routed through the turn signal switch. This makes it possible for the right rear light to function as a stop light while the left rear turn signal flashes, and vice-versa. When the contacts fail to remain constant the brake lights, and turn signals can become intermittent. The proof that the brake light switch is functioning correctly is that the high center (cyclops) brake light functions properly. Wiring integrity is verified if you can prove that turn signals operate, but that can still be intermittent with this complaint, BUT if you use your hazard switch to turn on all the signals at once, you can verify wiring integrity. This is because the turn signal, and the brake light use the same circuit, and bulb filament in the rear lighting assembly. If any Hazard lights fail to function, check bulbs first, then retest. If all Hazrd light flash correctly and reliably, bulbs, sockets, and wiring have proven integrity, and the turn signal switch is the remaining component in the system which needs to be tested. Unfortunately, this switch requires disassembly of the steering column for service, testing or replacement. If you have never disassembled, and successfully reassembled a GM tilt steering column, I would reccommend professional assistance.

SOURCE: 1994 CHEVY K1500 BRAKE LIGHTS DON'T WORK TOP CAB LIGHT WORKS

I figured out my problem!
From the VERY BEGINING... I changed my brake pedal switch with a BRAND NEW switch, and the lights still didn't work.

Well, I went back down there with a live wire and touched the contacts..and guess what.. the brake lights lit up!

I got a faulty NEW brake pedal switch!! I went a year with this problem, so learn from my issue, test even your new parts if it doesn't fix the problem to completely rule it out!

I hope you guys figure out what's going on with your issue.

I am having problems with rear brake lights, checked all bulbs, replaced brake switch, fuses checked, loose wires, both running lights and signal work, car is a2001 chevy lumina

Check the turn signal switch. especially if the center brake is the only brake light that comes on when you step on the brake pedal. Sometimes wiggling the switch will get the brake lights to work momentarily.

The brake lights wont work. The brake light over

the break light wire on the lumina runs through the blinker switch or multifunction switch on the colum.. check there as well as at the tail light sockets. on the late 90s gm cars the sockets had a tendancy to rot away... use a test light at the brake light wire in the trunk and have a friend apply the break. if there is power then may have to get new tail lights. or replacement bulbs.

Brake lights work intermittently

It sounds like a wiring fault - an earthing problem. Have a look around the lights/inside the lights themselves.. rear and front lights, brake lights, etc ...check the wires for corrosion/splitting. In particular check any black earth leads where they attach to an earthing point.
