I assume you're referring to a standard transmission (clutch pedal w/manual shifter)? Some of the most common problems w/this powertrain component are
1. low fluid level in the clutch master cylinder
2. Worn clutch disk and or dual mass flywheel.
3. leaky/worn clutch slave cylinder.

Least common

1. worn sychronizers inside the trans
2. worn/beveled cones-to-primary (or) primary synchronizer cone to secondary synchronizers. Some transmissions were designed with dual synchronizers.

Best advice is to have a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician properly diagnose the drivability issue you're having.

Go to hmaservice.com and register your vehicle by VIN #... you'll have access to shop manuals, wiring diagrams, technical service bulletins, etc. but don't get your hopes up... the shop manuals are not compete.... you'll still need assistance from a technician who's familiar with 'replacement' of tranny.

check out the cable that goes from the speedometer to the transmission if it is properly connected. The cable is thick and rotates as the car moves.

In 2002 they discontinued the external trans filter. So your vehicle could have the external filter. If you look next to the trans dipstick tube, on top of the trans case you will see the filter or you will see just a spot where the filter use to go before they eliminated it. Yes, the filter does llok like a regular engine oil filter. If the trans does not have the external filter ontop then there is no service to the filter to be done, the only recommendation is to bring vehicle into a shop to have the fluid flushed. By the way, make SURE you use the correct Hyundai SP-III trans fluid (not dexron/mercon). This fluid is specific to the Hyundai and can not be purchased from auto parts stores, only the dealership. Failure to use SP-III will cause premature wear to the internal bands and clutches.

does your car vibrate when shifting gears ??
your problem could be either worn gears on the transmission or the transmission mounts.
if the car vibrates when shifting then most likely are your transmission mounts, when they get worn the transmission will move a little out of place and you will have problems shifting.
if it doesn't vibrate probably are your gears and transmission will have to be repaired.
