Take it to your favorite local auto mechanic and have the engine checked out first. It is literally easier and about the same price to swap engines as it is to swap timing chains. Unless you are a mechanic with a shop with tools, or a glutton for punishment, I would not attempt this myself.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: 1999 grand am gt 3400 v6

If white smoke is coming out of your tail pipe is is burning antifreeze. However have it checked closely. While it could be a head gasket, the 3400 is noted for the intake gasket leaking. Have a pressure test done before you pay for something that you don't need.

Also there is a way to permanently repair the head gasket if it is a real leak as long as it still runs. Check out Barr's Leak head gasket repair and follow the directions to the letter. do not skip any thing. It works I have repair a dozen cars with this.

Hope this helps

Do 2002 pontiac grand am se has timing belt or timing chain and at what miles it has to be changed

Hi
The car has a timing belt - [ rubber] and should be changed at 100,000 miles - each 100,000 miles = new belt.
To save problems many people do this at about 90,000 miles and it is also best to change the water pump while you're in there.

Best of it.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee timing belt/chain replacement (not 4WD)

I BELIEVE THAT IT HAS A TIMING CHAIN. IT SHOULD BE CHANGED AT OR ABOUT 100,000 MILE. BUT IT DOESN'T NECESSARILY NEED TO BE CHANGED THEN, JUST INSPECTED.
