Your Nuvi has to boot past the Garmin logo to the main screen before it can be recognized by your PC. Is the unit dead? The Nuvi 14xx series is well known for its problem with the rear USB port coming loose. This will prevent the unit from receiving power from the external charger and will prevent the battery from being charged. If the unit goes into a boot-up loop, displaying the Garmin logo then shuts down, this is often caused by corrupted files, such as a map or bad firmware update. See these two links for more info:

Have you registered your device at Garmin and downloaded the latest version of Garmin Updater? Also connect the usb cable directly to a port on your computer and not thru a usb hub.
