My 1999 Lincoln Continental starts but will not shift out of "Park". The brake lights are working properly. How can I troubleshoot this problem.
Is the vehicle parked on an incline? The parking pin may be slightly jammed. If you can VERY CAREFULLY nudge the vehicle up the hill an inch or two, using another vehicle, the shift lever may free itself.
If the vehicle is parked on level ground, suspect the LOCKING SOLENOID for the shift lever.
Less likely, the parking pin may be jammed (inside the transmission), or the shift lever linkage may have become damaged.
Which wires do I shoot to check to determine if this solenoid is bad? Ohm values? Voltage? Is there a way to override it temporarily? Do you have a part number for the solenoid? Does the solenoid draw it's power directly from the brake switch? There is another switch, with a plunger, located further up brake pedal from the brake light switch. Could that be a factor?

these symptoms indicate the brake light switch above the brake pedal has failed. The switch has 2 connectors on it--one for the brake lights and one for the shift solenoid. If you pull the connectors off the switch and short the terminals inside each one together using a big paper clip or similar conductive material this should confirm by the operation of each function that the switch is the problem and need to be replaced. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The brake light switch on these boats are notorious for shorting out. Try replacing that or having it checked

Make sure you have brake lights. This is were the shifter solenoid gets it's signal from to get it out of gear.
One thing you can try is turn the igntion switch towards the run postion stopping just short of activating the electronics. Then try and move shifter to neutral then you can start it and out it into gear so you can drive it to get it fixed.
