Lets hope the timing belt didn't break! If it turns over very fast and kind of sounds like a sewing machine, this is probably the problem. If it is, big repair bill! If it cranks over and sounds like a normal engine that just isn't starting, there are a number of possibilities. Start by checking for spark. Get a spare spark plug and insert it into one of the plug leads and hold the threaded portion of the plug on a good ground. Have someone crank the engine over while you watch for spark. No spark means you have to check the entire ignition system. If you have spark, then you probably have a fuel problem, you can crack a line at the filter to see if fuel comes out when the engine cranks. No fuel means you may have a bad pump. If you do have fuel at the filter, you can use a stethoscope to listen to the fuel injectors, to make sure they are clicking when the engine is being cranked over. No clicking could mean a computer problem.

this is usually a sign of a bad starter when you turn the key and will not turn over but not sure why it died when stopping!

the keys and locks are not only specific to a particular ford explorer year model but they are also specific to a particular model.
