There is no evidence of any sats beig located when looking at the sat data screen. There are no errors in the error log screens. The problem was at first intermittent and then came hard on. Occurred whilst driving with no screen changes at the time. All other aspects of the GPS are working ok.
Latest software has been loaded.
This unit has always been "suss" in satellite discovery. Have 760 as well that I use extensively, as well as Street pilot and an old model 45. Perhaps the last garmin I will buy.
Turned out to be an antenna problem. From the suggested web site, did a test with an external antenna (piece of wire) and saw the satellites come up each time. have to find out if I can fix the internal antenna now. Low battery level is one reason for poor connection to satellites. However your problem may be a faulty SIIRF chip. Now I have to say that connectinhg the unit prior to starting the engine can damage the chip so refrain fromn doing this in any future GPS operation. The reapair for bad chip if not under warranty is arms and legs cost
go to Marbella Australia ( Marbella Altina) website to look at two units in products area A 8010 and A860 I think both are excellent units well supportede and maps are Polstar for whatever country you need. use the contact button to make an enquiry or go to the order button you will be contacted back within hours, great service!
Garmin are OK but jolly expensive to repair and upgrade and have lousy backup service
If you decide to buy a relaible GPS get an ALTINA they make the boards for most GPS units on the market Except tom Tom and Mio which are cheap and nasty there are so many faults on those brands on this forum i am surprised they are still in business.

About the camcorder, u have tap & hold anywhere on the screen to take a picture.
The radar/sat dish icon indicates that u have ur GPS on & that's why u u run out of battery so quick, to turn it off go to Settings/Location & security u should see these two options on top .....Use wireless networksUse GPS satellitesto turn them off un check both off them by doing so the radar/sat dish icon on screen will go off.
All Sat NAv systems need to be able to "see" a minimum number of satellites in the sky, even something as simple as clouds can and do affect the quality of the received signals, check to see how many satellites your system is locking onto and check to ensure that any external antenna's are correctly connected and powered if required.
if all else fails, you may have a logic fault within the Sat Nav unit itself..
If the unit is fully charged and has a clearv view of the sky but fails to connect then the SIIRF chip is damaged. Expensive to repair and often not worth the trouble. This problem is not covered by warranty as it has been induced by misuse. Plugging it to the Dc when staring the engine will do this type of damage. often not in manual to avoid this practice. only brand i have seen that warns about this is marbella altina, which is a good brand of GPS ( see marbella australia FAQ page )regarding what they say bout using GPS. Not just GPS but mobile phones can also be damaged this way.
Garmin and TOMTOM seem to be more prone tom this type of damage than the Altina. I write for many fixya type groups and rarely see any Altina problems compared to garmin and TomTom. With 1,.2 million GPS in circulation they have to be good
Globalstar's satellites have a defect in them that caused downstream service to fail. They launched some satellites a few months ago and are planning to launch four more in June'ish. They are supposed to have the constellation fully working by March of next year.
Are you outside with a clear view of the sky? It should find satellites once the unit is turned on. Does it say "Looking for satellites" or "Acquiring satellites"?
If it is "looking for satellites" then it means that the unit have lost all data (time, date, location). If it is "acquiring satellites" then it have date and time, but not location.
Looking for satellites require a longer setup time (could be as much as 15 minutes). Acquiring satellites is much faster (not more than 2 minutes).
Date and time is updated from satellites once the unit gets a satellite lock.
Thanks for this, I will check it out and report back.
You have a good site there at quick glance.
