Thereshould be a sticker under your hood that will tell you which engine you have.. Drive by the dealer and ask them which engine you have.. they should not charge you for this information.. You can take the VIN number into any ford dealer parts dept. and they can tell you which engine you have.

If you still have the original engine in the vehicle the engine can be identified by the 8th digit in the Vehicle Identifiaction Number (VIN) which is located on the dash at the bottom left of the windshield (best viewed from outside of the vehicle.
The letters N or P indicate a 5.0 liter engine.
The letter X indicates a 4.0 liter V-6 engine.

For 2001 Ford Mustang 3.8L SFI 6cyl engine, with which your specific vehicle is equipped, can be most easily identified by the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), located on either the VIN tag, mounted in the upper left-hand corner of the instrument panel, or on the vehicle certification label, located on the driver-s side door pillar. The engine identifying code is the 8th digit of the VIN. The engine VIN codes are as follows:
