If it's 4WD it may be ABS sensors. If the computer sees either the front wheels going faster than the rear or vice verse it engages the transfer case. If it still sees the condition it will shift the trans into neutral. Probably one of the sensors on the front.

Sounds like a coil problem, I don't know how the ignition systems work in the hemi's but your coil could be overheating.

SOURCE: I HAVE 1994 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE LAREDO 4.0 ALL

Well, there aren't really THAT many clutches in an automatic trans. The older ones had 2 or 3 and 2 band brakes that controlled 2 or 3 forward speeds and reverse. Newer ones have one or two more for overdrive and more speeds. Your jeep is more like the older style, with a lockup torque converter added. The original problem sounded like a piece of contamination in the tailshaft governor, and the best thing was (once it started working again) to leave it alone. The old Chrysler owners manuals told you not to touch the transmission, EVER, unless it was being used for a taxi or towing. The risk of additional contamination far outweighed the benefits of changing the fluid. Your problem now sounds like the valve body is contaminated and something is stuck. There are lots of little spools and valves that are machined to very tight tolerances. Little fibers from clutch wear and filter changes can cause this. It's got pressure, and it's still got clutches (it wants to be in 1st gear). A new valve body is a good bet to fix the problem, but the best thing is to take it to a transmission guy you think you can trust to test the pressures in the valve body and determine what is actually stuck and tell you if it can be repaired or needs replacing.

2004 jeep liberty won't move when put in gear (like brakes are locked).crank it in neutral put in gear it will go till i touch brakes then won't move again.WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS THING.

gear, is this a Manual trans? or AUTO you said gear.
what gear, please name the gear, 1,2,3,4,5 R
or PRNDL ( a/t box auto matic) what shift lever selection?
what is out door air temp, you do know brakes can get wet and freeze right?
it wont go you meant? until brakes are touched, key word won't?

ok engine only starts in PRNDL set to N??
is that it?
and then when you shift to D, the car will not move
what about the other gears.? try them all yet?

my guess (wild) is that you dont know how park lock out works.?
that you must hold the brake pedal down to shift to park or neutral.
is that it? (read operators guide?)

my guess is car is not drive-able. key point1 (a dead car)
point 2, engine starts and runs. and races on demand with gas foot.
point 3, im lost. (no trans stated or clear symptoms.)

my jeep has 6speed manual box
and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.

"it will go till i touch brakes"

I read that 10 times,
my 2nd guess. the engine stalls ?

IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.

My 2000 jeep grand Cherokee Laredo 4 Ă— 4 automatic makes a roaring sound from under the car and a vibration under my feet. When I shift into neutral while driving, it stops. The Trans shifts fine . Any...

A bad u-joint makes a higher frequency sound /vibration than say an unbalanced tire. If you have the v-8, you have all wheel drive and the front driveshaft is always driven. Crawl underneath and wiggle both front and rear driveshafts, if one move significantly more, you've found the culprit. Go ahead and replace all the U-joints at that point.

Can I tow my 4X4 auto grand cherokee behind a Mtr Hm? I will put everything in N (transfer case & Trany)

I have a jeep wrangler and to have it towed you are suppose to put the transverecase in neutral after you first depress brake pedal put trans in neutral then start engine shift auto trans into drive release brake pedal make sure there is no movement, shut engine off with key left in acc position shift auto trans into park, disconnect neg battery cable (damage can result in trans if shifted into park while transvere case is in neutral with engine running) you should refere to your owners manuel

Shifting lever doesnt lock

Likely the shift detent mechanism is broken. It's inside the unit and can be reached by removing the trans pan. It should be just inside where the shift lever goes through the case.

Jeep 4wd auto trans

while moving about 2-5 mph, shift your transmission into neutral but keep the vehicle rolling, then move the transfer case shift from 4HI to 2HI.
