This is a complex problem. 1. remove, check and clean brewhead (round screen above portafilter where water comes out); it can become clogged with gunk. 2. brewhead gasket may be old or damaged, they can be purchased on eBay. 3. brewing basket may have become clogged, I don't know if running cleaner solution through it will help, may have to replace it. 4. Likeliest source of problem is coffee ground too fine and/or tamped down too hard. These are not professional level machines and cannot work with very fine grind or heavy tamping. Try a coarser grind and a light tamp with the larger brew basket. Coffee must be ground with good quality burr grinder for correct consistency. You should be unscrewing anti-clockwise to remove it, if it will not come out, then there is probably somethiung stuck in the filter preventing it from pulling out.
Try moving it from side to side as you are unscrewing and pulling.
I had the same problem when I started using the Sirena. When I put the portafilter on I was lining it up with the arrow. I found that if I tighten the portafilter on all the way to the right (past the arrow) it works perfect, no water spraying.
anyone else w/ this problem: cheap workmanship = cheap, malfunctioning machine. turn it upside down, unscrew the 4 screws w/ metal washers and the six screws with out washers from the base of the housing. once removed, you can see that cheap metal clamps are used around the plastic hoses which supply water from resevoir to steamer & brewhead via the pump. either length of hose above pump or below pump has come loose or pump is fauly or there is a hole in a tube. good luck!
