From the moment I start the car the heating gauge rises to the red line rather quickly. It is not over heating because it is doing nothing but blowing cold air. The check gauges light comes on. But just before it starts blowing heat, I hear a loud popping sound from underneath the hood. Then the needle will fall back and it will blow heat, but it does not stay like that. After several minutes it falls back to the red line and it blows cold air, then a few moments later I hear the loud popping sound then it blows heat again. It goes back and forth like that. What could be the problem?
The heater has went out of it or something is keeping it from trying to get it to warm up

Just fixed this problem myself.
In addition to the above description, my service engine light came on about a week after the gauge stopped working.
Took it to Auto Zone and had them do an error code scan, this is a free service of AutoZone.
Code P0126 - Coolant Temp is always low.
3 possible causes
1) Check Engione Coolant
2) Thermostat defective
3) ECT sensor defective.
I added approx two pints of coolant. The Check Engine Soon light went out and the temp gauge started working again.

its likley to be the pipe has been riped off or fell off or its the flaps on the heater box its self not opening,,,have a look under the dash to fine any pipes that are off the heater box,,
anyhow, who cears if the passanger gets cold,,, its the driver who needs to keep warm!!!!
unless its the other half? or worse still its the mother in law!!!! ho ho ho!
