Hi, I have a Cobra 2000GTL Taiwan made PC board number pc497ab The set has been stored for a while (couple of years) and I just received it,I switched it on and (with antenna connected ,SWR 1.2) and the speaker just crackles? I have no reception whats so ever .The PA system works and so does transmission on SSB and AM with good modulation .I kept the set on for a while and now the crackle on speaker has gone away and I just hear a soft hiss coming from the speaker.(I have changed speaker too but no luck) RF is turned full open and SQ right down (all adjustments for receive is adjusted correctly) and when I key another set on same channel as the 2000GTL home base. I can just hear a little noise, the receive signal meter on receive does not move at all? Can anyone please assist me on this as here we battle to get spares on CB's .After I get this set to work I would like to do more mods on it as more frequencies etc.but I have to make it receive first.Hope to get someone to assist me,thank you!

I have several two way radios .The GTL 2000 does not recieve ( just a little noise) very soft. The audio amp is working as there is a hiss (very tiny) I tested the PA and works fine.My anttenna is tuned ,I have tried other speakers no luck. The signal meter on transmit works but when I transmit from another set next to it on same channel there is no signal meter response on the Cobra 2000 I have a Cobra 148 Taiwan made rig too and it transmits well but the volume is pretty low on it and again I have tested the adio amp and works well but replaced it just in case,I did have to change the voltage regulator.I do find that the voltage regulator and audio amp gets pretty warm a while after it has been switched on( this is now the 148.) So I have two Cobras the 2000 with no sound ,works fine on transmit and a 148 that has very low volume. Is this a problem on Cobras?

It would be very hard to diagnose the problem from just the informations listed. My experience is a radio that has been sitting will have problems with the electrolytic capacitors drying out and throwing the receive tuning way off. The capacitors are the small metal can looking devices on the board. There are a lot of them. The top of them should be flat. If one is rounded on the top it is often times bad. Of course it could be a transistor in the receiver chain. Just one bad one will stop everything. It could also be a bad solder joint. You can try pushing gently on different places on the board with something non-metalic like the body of a plastic ink pen. Flex the board slighty and see if you get a change in sound or you can hear other stations. If so, you have the delicate process of tracking down the bad joint and repairing it. Just lightly using a solder pencil to remelt joints will often solve this type problem. If you can't find it then it will take a technician with the proper equipment to track it down. Good luck.

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE MANUFACTURING DATE OF A COBRA 2000 GTL SERIAL NUMBER 43004092

    https://www.worldwidedx.com/threads/cobra-2000gtl-carbon-dating.146028/

Manufacturer replied to someone that couldn't date models by serial number, but that they began building the model in 1978.

I need help figuring out exactly how old the CB radio, if it even is one in my possession, actually is? It is a "Cobra 17" Solid State Citizens Band 2-way Radio. Made by a corporation called...

Dynascan was around in the 70's and early 80's. I would take a look at the manual it should have a publication copyright year on it, or look at the serial number plate on the back of the radio some times the year the radio was made is on it. This would be the only clue to the age of the radio.

Does anyone know the part number for the volume control rotary encoder for an Aiwa AV-DV70U audio/video receiver? There are no markings on the component but the pc board is marked SW101. A schematic...

The EC16B24304 number above is a discontinued Alps part. I found an equivalent encoder from Taiwan Alpha available on Mouser.com, part number RE160F-40E3-20A-24P. It has the same footprint, shaft length and keying. It fits perfectly. It has a lower rotational force than the Alps encoder and 24 detents per rotation instead of a smooth feel, but it is perfectly acceptable. I just made this repair on my Aiwa CX-NA222 stereo, and I've got my volume control back!

Need assistance on finding how old an item is..

Where the unit was made is a good indication of how old it is. If it was made in Taiwan it is real old. Philippians is after that and Malaysia is the newest.

Other then that you can contact Cobra directly for them to look up the serial number.

Cobra 2000gtl no sound comeing out but will talk on am and ssb can you help

Because you have transmit, more than likely your audio section is OK as much of it is shared with the receive side. A final test of the audio section is to check out the PA function. If it works most of the audio section has been tested.

The signals for the meter movement and receiver sound are developed in the audio detector circuit (diodes D21 and D22) just past the I.F. stages (Transistors TR16, TR17, and TR18). I have seen these diodes fail. They are frail little guys, but are inexpensive. I would recommend replacing them first. Pay particuliar attention to which way the band on the diode is positioned and limit your soldering time. If that does'nt rectify the problem, (no pun intended) you can look at the transitors.
By the way, MOVE that second test radio farther away or you could overload the front end of your Cobra creating even more problems. Good Luck, 302

    Cobra 2000GTL

    Hello wood butcher,

This sounds like a capacitor is not discharging fast enough and has enough residual voltage stored to continue to power the display (to a point). I would check the capacitors that are connected to the vcc of the display matrix and also check to see if one of the resistors has not increased in value due to a possible thermal event.

Tell me how this works out,
    Thank you,
