My 22 hp craftsman riding lawn mower gets really hot after10 to 20 minutes and backfires and loses power

  • h_mdakin Sep 05, 2013

I thought maybe gas was getting into the exhaust system and causing it to get really hot and backfiring in the muffler?

You may have a mouse problem. Check the shroud (motor cover) to see if there is shredded paper or other material under shroud. If the mouse shreddings get in the fins on flywheel it will cause the engine to overheat. Remove shroud and clean underneath.

I have a briggs and Stratton 22 hp Intek V-twin engine on our Craftsman riding mower. After about 30 minutes of mowing the engine suddenly began to run rough, loud and out of sync.

my thought is the valves are out of adjustment. that is the popping you hear or backfiring. i think if you take off and clean the carburetor and set the valve lash it will probably run like a new one.

BACKFIRES WHEN YOU KILL IT.

Let it idle for 5 minutes before shutting the engine off to stabilize the internal temperature, that should stop the backfiring which is fuel lighting off when hitting the hot combustion chamber surfaces.

I own a craftsman tractor 17.5 Horsepewer. my tractor is losing power and the muffler starts to get red after 1 minute.

This indicates a over fuel problem . I suggest your take it in and have a certified tech check out the problem, rather than DIY and risk loosing that engine.

I started my craftsman 21hp 42in deck today it had a rough idle with backfire and when engade mower it seemed to not have enough power

Backfiring is a sign of too rich on gas and not enough air. Not enough gas will cause the mower to bog down when blades are engaged as it isn't powerful enough to run the motor AND turn the blades. Check your carb and see if you need to clean it and replace diaphgram. Sounds a lot like a carb problem.

Gas in the oil in my craftsman 17.5 riding mower

You have a bad antibackfire valve. It is located on carburator below the fuel bowl. You can replace it, or as I advise others, install an inline shutoff valve. Turn the fuel valve on to start it, then turn it off when you shut the engine down.
