The immobilizer stays active until you actually try to start. To start (and turn the immobilizer off) the key needs to be in the ignition, the code in the fob read by the security system and the ignition switched to start - this is when the immobilzer LED goes off.
If the car was unlocked and had the correct key the car would still not start unless the key was attached to the correct fob.

Replace the battery in the key. There is probably an interlock between the doorlocks and the ignition key. Steering will not operate until the ignition key interlock functions and the engine is started.
Ensure that the steering lock is disengaged by moving the wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key. Next puff a bit of powered graphite in the key slot to free up any stuck tumbler pins ( care here as graphite powder is dirty and will require a wet rag to remove the black stains). Next try another key to see if the key is not too badly worn to move the pins.
