Nikon F4 - shutter replacement

Have a fully working Nikon F4s... but just destroyed its shutter curtain! Have also an older F4s whose shutter I can use to repair the first camera. How do I remove / install the shutter unit?

Hi Miguel,
It would be better to send it to Nikon. For mere mortals swapping shutters may very much mess up the camera beyond repair. If you truly love the F4 have Nikon do the work and at the same time have them do a CLA as well.

Cordially,

F4 has an electronic shutter so check batteries ( see enclosed image ). If your batteries are fresh but still no power ( see if display comes on in view finder ) clean contacts in the battery holder. If still no joy camera should go in.5abb190.jpg

SOURCE: Nikon F4s battery holder

Just found this post, so you might already have one, but have you tried eBay? I got one on there for just £8 sterling (around $15 US) and when it arrived it was in almost new condition. The guy even threw in 6 rechargeable cells, which looked new (and I'm still using them) which must have been worth the £8 I paid him, without the MD21!

Good luck.

SOURCE: chronic sticking shutter on older Nikon

If the shutter doesn't stick on the M90 position, the problem is electronic. If it does, the issue is mechanical. Try the battery check. Hold it for a few seconds. If the LED goes out, the issue is most likely with the batteries. Use really fresh, top quality batteries. Use only silver oxide batteries, not the alkalines that are often substituted.

SOURCE: Touched the shutter curtains

Yes it will have an affect on your shooting. The curtains will not operate correclty if they are opening and closing at different speeds and / or not closing or opening completely. Your film will expose at different levels, and you will not get a correctly composed shot. You could try to coax the curtain back into place by GENTLY rubbing it with a Q-tip in the direction it is supposed to go. But those things are fragile and can be fickle. Your best bet is to take it to a shop.

SOURCE: Nikon N55 camera locks up

The F-- indicates that the camera is not communicating with the lens. There are several reasons for this.

The lens is not capable of communicating. If it's an old lens, without the electrical contacts, then you'll have to set the camera to Manual (M) mode in order to use this lens.

If the lens has an aperture ring, set it to the smallest aperture (biggest F/number) and lock it (if it has a lock).

If the lens has no aperture ring, then the contacts may be dirty. Remove lens, clean contacts on back of the lens and in the mount on the body, then reattach lens.

If that doesn't do it, then either the camera and/or the lens may require service.

F4 Manuel

You may download the F4 manual at http://cdn-10.nikon-cdn.com/pdf/manuals/archive/F4-F4S.pdf

The correct settings depend on the subject and on what you want the photo to say to the viewer.

Nikon F4 - how to replace the shutter

try and find a copy of the Jan/Feb 1993 SPT Journal (try Ebay) which covers this repair, or look for a copy of the Nikon repair manual. If you are not good at small item repair and soldering take it to a professional. Also use a anti-static work mat and wrist strap.

I turned it to the right and now the display lights up fully.

Black area in photograph

Unless you are using high-end Nikon Speedlights with camera and flash set for Auto FP High-Speed Sync, your top flash sync shutter speed on the D80 is 1/200 second. The black band you are seeing at faster shutter speeds is because the second curtain of the shutter begins to close before the first curtain reaches the fully-open position (which is when the flash fires). The higher the shutter speed, the shorter the gap between first and second curtains. To get full exposure with flash, there must be an instant when the shutter is fully open -- first curtain completed travel, second curtain not started yet.

"As the speed increases the final image should get lighter" applies to ISO speed. Higher shutter speeds mean less light reaching the sensor, but that's not the cause of the black bands.

Will not auto focus

"... Autofocus Lock ("AF-L"). Pressing the AF-L (Autofocus Lock) button enables the Nikon F4 to lock the focus. Simultaneous lock of AF-L and AE-L is possible. "'FREEZE FOCUS" - is another great function in the F4. It allows automatic shutter release when subject enters a pre focused distance - available with Nikon MF-23 and/or the 250 exp. MF-24 Multi-Control Back. i.e. with the shutter button fully depressed, the shutter is automatically fired when a subject comes into a preset manually focused position. This function is recommended for sports races because the racing course is usually known beforehand. It also works well in wildlife remote control photography, scientific, forensic and other technical photography. ..."
