Engineer seeks help with no-picture, no-sound, normal standby blinking

I have a Sony KD-34XBR960 (34" CRT HDTV) that I want to keep running. Yesterday it stopped working with the following symptoms: No sound, no picture (totally black). There is NO fast-blinking self-diagnosis code. Unplugging the TV overnight, and plugging it back in; this restores the picture. While it was "warming up" the stand-by LED blink "normally" 11 1/2 times before the picture came on. I immediately turned off the TV, assuming I'd do more damage by keeping it on. I can't find the remote control needed to get the self-diagnoses history displayed on the screen. I am an engineer. I have the Sony service manual. I know how to professionally solder and desolder. I have a DMM, a digital oscilloscope, and a microscope. I know how to order components from Digikey. I have a colleague who is an "old-school" EE with TV experience, but I don't want to drag him into this willy-nilly without doing some work myself.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Keep in mind that the 10-12 second "warm up" time was after I unplugged the TV for hours, so no "instant on" feature.

Our $2700 less than 3 year old Sony LCD KDL-40XBR5 did the same thing 2 weeks ago. Sony was anything but helpful. They said to take it to a repair shop or we could send them $550 and they would replace it with a $800 set.

Could just be a power issue. I have not done much with CRT televisions except smash them to bits. I would open it up and try and look for anything obvious. Since it is taking so long to come on, I am wandering if there is a cap that is failing. It will be hard to know if there is no visual evidence of failure, and the only true way to measure is with an ESR meter.

SOURCE: Sony 60' projection model # kdfe60a20

I finally wet out and bought the tv repair manual. Thought the problem had to be more than the bulb because i was losing sound too. Everything in hte repair manual brought me to the bulb or the ballast. I ordered a replacemant bulb. I spent about 150, which included overnight shipping. I replaced the bulb just before Thanksgiving and haven't had any problems as of yet....

SOURCE: Standby LED blinks 4 times

Hi there,

4 blinks on a Sony Bravia indicates a backlight/inverter (aka ballast) problem. These ballasts are regrettably only available with an entire LCD panel. :( You may perchance be able to find a parts outfitter online that scraps out TVs and have a used ballast.

Typical backlight problem on an LCD shows up as the screen lighting up for a second or two and going back off. The 4 blinks just confirms your problem.

SOURCE: Our big screen sony tv stopped working yesterday.

Please try disconnecting all the cables from the TV including the power cables then reconnect them back after a few minutes. You may also try connecting the power cord from the TV directly to a functional wall outlet. If the issue persists then service will be required.

SOURCE: 40'' Sony Bravia goes into standby with the light blinking 9 times

I finally managed to solve this problem by unplugging everything - scarts - HDD cables - power etc and left it for an hour. When I turned it back on again the problem had sorted itself out.

SOURCE: My flat screen tv shuts off and standby led blinks 13 times.

Our $2700 less than 3 year old Sony LCD KDL-40XBR5 did the same thing 2 weeks ago. Sony was anything but helpful. They said to take it to a repair shop or we could send them $550 and they would replace it with a $800 set. Repairman says that it is a panel and the part has been discontinued by Sony. The 46" sets had the same problem and were recalled but not the 40" screen. We stopped on the way home and purchased a 40"

SONY TV PICTURE TURN GREEN WITHOUT RETRACE

Picture goes to high green with retrace lines that shows picture tube is defective and requires replacement.
Usually in above symptom, TV goes to standby mode and standby light blinks when green raster problem occurred.
New TV is better option because picture tube of KV-34XBR960 would not be available any more.
Thanks.

Does the ligh blink a certain number of times and the stop briefly and repeat the same pattern? If so you have a problem that is beyond your ability to service it and must be serviced by a certified sony tech.
