to solve this problem youneed access to apowerdata recovery software, install the software and it will rescue yor data then yo can re format and safe the rescued data back onto the harddrive.
Always disconnect your USB harddrive in the correct manner and try not to disconnect in the middle of transfer mode. Make sure when you connect the hard drive to your PC you booth the drive befote connecting the USB cable to yor PC.

I've had the same issue, you should remember to take backups on various different storage devices, you can't rely on just one, you should buy a couple of disks and back up that way, you are less likely to loose all your stuff the next time.
it probably asked you to format because of a bad partition or sector of your drive normally because a surge on the line or you have dropped it.

Need to format my portable HD (Buffalo 3.5 500GB Mini-station) before using as External HDD for my TV (LG 42LA6200)?

BUFFALO TOOLS Buffalo Tools is a feature-rich suite of optional software included on many Buffalo Drive-Station and Mini Station storage products. Any or all of the following components of Buffalo Tools may be installed on Windows PCs.
Buffalo's Backup Utility is an easy-to-use and fully featured backup software for Windows PCs and can be used to back up one or multiple computers with a single Buffalo external hard drive.ECO Manager is an energy efficiency tool used to conserve energy and reduce battery consumption by regulating the power usage of the hard drive, cutting power to the drive during extended periods of inactivity.RAMDISK is a simple utility that allows you to create a RAM disk on your Windows PC which creates a small, but extremely fast environment to work on files in.SecureLock software for Windows provides complete control of the data encryption on your Buffalo external hard drive, providing password protection and software data encryption.

Only basic external hard drive functionality is supported with this operating system; some included utilities may not work. The HDD default format is NTFS; to work with Mac, reformat the HDD using Mac Disk Utility.

I would plug it into a windows 7 or Vista and the computer's USB. The computer should recognize it. Click start then computer and find the icon for your drive and right click your Icon. In the drop-down window look for 'format' and that should help you format your drive. is a feature-rich suite of optional software included on many Buffalo Drive-Station and Mini Station storage products. My physical formatting of my 1tb external hard drive was interrupted. will it damage the internal programs and affect the good working condition of my external hard drive? i'll wait for your...

It'd help if you could say what kind of interruption you experienced. As long as its working now, I\d suggest you copy all your data onto another storage device and do another format. It'll take care of any bad or corrupted cluster that might've formed. Your data should be fine.

By removing/replacing the hard drive, will the stored data be lost?

the data is stored onto the hard drive, so if you remove the hard drive from the external drive box, you've removed the data from the box, but taking the hard drive out of the box doesn't destroy the data. They're still safe and sound on the hard drive.

1tb external hard drive wont appear in my computer

Have you "Formatted" it before you used it, If NOT, Right Click on drive and select "Format" format NTFS. After this you should be able to use the drive as normal. Also Right Click, MY Computer, choose "Manage" when it comes up select Disk Management, and you can initialise it and format there.

My DEll PC runnig XP SP3 cannot

Hi,

Yes the drive is compatible with XP. I have seen a slightly higher than normal # of problems with their 1TB models so this may just be a batch problem. My suggestion if there's nothing crucial on the drive is to return it an purchase a different brand.

If it's not returnable you'll have to settle for asking Buffalo for a replacement. If there's crucial data on it you will need the help of a recovery pro. In that case, comment back with your Country, State and City and I will point you to a nearby Recovery facility.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris
