I have a transcend external hard disk 500gb. for a long time, whenever i connect it to the pc, it gets detected but shortly afterward, it gets disconnected.. it shhows 300gb of data in it intact and all the files are there but whenever i open it, it gets disconnected. i changed the adapter connecting the hard disk to the pc, i even conncted the hard disk directly as a slave to the pc's hhard drive but nothing works. i need to recover the data. what do i do sir?

Download and install free software called RECUVA. It can search the entire external hard drive. This will take some time to complete. Then you'll see a list of files which have been found. Please recover/save the files to a different hard drive.

Your drive has most likely developed bad sectors, if your data is precious do not run software recovery programs over it since this can stress the drive and cause it to fail completely, take it to a data recovery company. If you do wish to try it yourself use an imaging tool like dd_rescue for linux, also remove the drive from the USB enclosure and connect the drive directly to the machine.

Download the "password protection manager" software from the Sony website. When installed it will detect your Sony External hard drive.

Interesting solutionI have noticed. I shut down computer, then, connect drive, and turn on computer. Then after computer is up and running works great. BUT!! You should never go to sleep mode on computer without first Safely remove device! And every time you shut down computer you should Safely remove device. If disk fails again, just shut down computer, and connect drive, and start it again...

Hard disks DO NOT like hard knocks, this hard disk is broken, especially when they make loud noises.
It can't be fixed, by us mortals. Cheaper to get a new one.

guess you are using a USB port to for that.....
1 - check the cable that connects the HD to the USB port...change the cable and verify
2 - connect to another PC and check if it's ok there
3 - bring another ext HD from a friend and try conencting that....check if that's OK
4 - there could be a corruption in the HD that is preventing the PC from reading it

cardinal rule for USB....not a very dependent device specialy if connecting thru USB data cables....
solution
always use a good qty USB data cable compatible with USB2....as some cheap cables are only for USB1

Here is the Procedure for Connecting External Drives to Computer.Several brands of computer does not recognise external drives when connected to USB expansion slots,and Slots of front panel,So connect your Ext HDD to back side onboard Slots.Because there is a lack off USB power surge voltage to detect a large capacity exteral drives.Some time it is does not recognise by many computers,when USB power surge voltage is low.
